Don't you believe they are duty-free. Don't, or you'll be in for a nasty surprise.
Ad Valorem Products include, amongst others, Motor Vehicles, Electronic Equipment, Cosmetics, Perfumeries and other products generally regarded as “luxury items” and are subjected to the payment of Ad Valorem Excise Duty if used within the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).
As to shipping phones - phone then back and quote the prohibited items list at them:

Huh, honestly I'm in two minds at the moment.
Because everything I've seen/read has indicated that cell phones are duty free.
From dutycalculator.com : Duty rates in South Africa vary from 0% to 45%, with an average duty rate of 18.74%. Some goods are not subject to duty (e.g. laptops, electric guitars and other electronic products).

All I can tell you is my experience, and I had to pay duty.
I'm not doubting you, I'm just rethinking my plan. As if what you say is true - and maybe other forum members can collaborate your findings - then the landing price difference between ordering from overseas and ordering locally is only around R200~.
In which case it's not worth it.

So I figured it out.
On mobile phones there is no import duty. There is however Ad valorem, as well as a charge for items outside of BLNS countries.
So to get your final cost it is ((Customs Value + 10%) + (7%)) + 14%
That's pretty much it, then adding your shipping on top of that.

So after trying out Aramex for the first time in a year I can say things have gone from bad to worse. They are just not streamlined, I don't get it, there is no reason why they are so inept at doing the basics.
The only beacon of light is Olivia at the JHB depot, she is a shining light in this inefficient organisation.
I suppose once again, as an alternative to the postal service they are great, but as an efficient courier service, they are not even close to other courier services available.
For example I purchased an item delivered to a certain depot and my options were either Aramex or EMS, so went with Aramex, the lessor of the two evils - parcel was delivered last week Tuesday to the Aramex depot, it is still on route to JHB. On Thursday last week I purchased from the same location but a different supplier who sent with DHL - I received the DHL shipment yesterday.
Anyhow just venting, I sort of knew what to expect
The only beacon of light is Olivia at the JHB depot, she is a shining light in this inefficient organisation.
I suppose once again, as an alternative to the postal service they are great, but as an efficient courier service, they are not even close to other courier services available.

Agreed - but again, you get what you pay for. My last shipment in February would have cost me almost twice as much, from the second cheapest quote I could find, which would have been way out of my acceptable price range.

Apples and Oranges.
You want fast, you use DHL. You pay accordingly.
You want it fast but less expensive than DHL, you use Postbox-Courier.
You want it slower but cheaper you use Aramex Global Shopper.
You want to go and fetch it from your nearest post office, praying it is all in one piece, you use EMS.

Never used him, because I think it is only one man doing the couriering. What happens to your order if he gets mugged? You insured?

Ordered an item that arrived at HK on the 18th, where it sat doing nothing until the 22nd, but then it took only 1 day to arrive in JHB. I will probably have it by the 24th, if unlucky the 25th. Is not so bad considering I only paid R122 to AGS. So that would be 7 days in total then.
Great value for money IMHO. You won't get better anywhere else.

Definitely great value. Received my item yesterday. Was delivered to the NY hub on the 15th of May.
They only updated the rest of the customs charges on the website today (VAT+R57), but still not able to make payment for it.

- weigh less than 0.5 KG
- cost less than $25
- want it faster than SAPO will do
usually come through fast, no import tax, and only cost R122 for shipping through AGS (using fnb discount).

Agreed, but they don't combine orders, which is a pain when you want to order 10 x small things from all over the place.

Hey guys, I'm contemplating purchasing an item off of Amazon that doesn't ship here, so I figured I'd give Aramex a try.
Are they able to give me a quote on shipping to SA and roughly what customs would cost?

You can get a shipping quotation from the Aramex Global Shopper main page. Amazon give unboxed weight calculations, so take that into account. Check post #1365 for estimated duties. After you know what you're looking at, add the New York address to Amazon and act like am American.
