Aramex global shopper

Does anyone have any ideas on how VAT would be calculated on a carbon fiber bicycle frame sent through the AGS US origin? The frame cost $200 + $85 for shipping to the US address. I contacted AGS to get a vat/duties estimate and they told me R2810. Thats the same value as the frame itself. I did a HS code lookup and its 8714.91 with 0% duties and 14% vat (with a possible 10% markup on the price). That still only brings me to roughly R500 and nothing near the estimate they provided. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you are looking at the wrong code.. your code is for Motorcycles.

Your code is probably 8712.00.10 which has a 15% duty at least...

I'm fairly sure its the right code. 87.14 is the sub heading for parts of items with the headings 87.11 to 87.13 and those 3 headings cover bicycles and other cycles. I just called FedEx to double check and they told me just under R600 including disbursement and clearance fee as long as its just the frame and not a complete bicycle, if its complete then it incurs a 15% duty plus vat. So even if they did charge 15% plus vat, how could it total over 100% of the value?

Glimmer of hope I reckon..

Olivia responded to me after I turned into a BIT of a pain, but had the new amended Customs charges before 2pm and have paid it and apparently they've authorised the release of the package.

Heres hoping I can geek out a bit this weekend and walk around my house talking to it :p

Olivia (if you read this thread), I apologise for being a a pain in the rear end, and I know you guys are swamped at this point in time and none of this issue was caused by you or your team. I do wish the communication was possibly a bit better but in general I cannot fault you and your teams work.

I agree after looking at the whole document.. you're right..

Then its obvious that Aramex have it wrong... I think maybe someone in their Customs department isn't all that accurate...

Phone Aramex and ask the same question (the Express, not Aramex Global Shopper) . See if it agrees with Fedex.

Fingers and toes crossed. 100% of the original price is a nasty knock to take just before the start of the festive season.

I have a package sitting at "cleared at customs" for almost a week now. After speaking to Aramex 3 times this week they advised that they should send instructions for it to be released, still no movement and still sitting at "cleared at customs"!!

Mine said that as well for three weeks. After a few calls bugging Aramex they have indicated that they lost parcel and it never arrived in country. Hopefully you have better luck.....

I've also had the dreaded "Cleared from Customs" message for a few days. After calling and being a nuisance, I was also told the package had gone missing. It was routed through Dubai where they included a photo of the package but from there to Johannesburg it somehow went AWOL. Hope you have better luck!

Aramex has no clue where the package is, just asked Amazon and they told me is still in transit but can't tell me where..

Great, Thanks Aramex for fing up another Christmas present

The Aramex customs number is also useless, you wait 15 min and then it just disconnects...

I am confused by my one package through AGS.

Tracking:
Code:
Johannesburg, South Africa	12/13/2017 09:15	Shipment Update - shipment sent to dispatch ( awaiting for the driver to collect )
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa	12/12/2017 15:13	Received at Operations Facility
London, United Kingdom	12/10/2017 13:29	Departed Operations facility – In Transit
London, United Kingdom	12/09/2017 08:22	Received at Operations Facility
<snip>

Now it shows the following: "Status: Shipment Update shipment sent to dispatch ( awaiting for the driver to collect )"

But there was no customs entries yet. *confused*

I used Aramex weekly for imports for my business and they have gotten the HS code wrong quite a few times and charged me too much. But every time I have given them the correct code and insisted on it they have sorted it out. The HS code for a bicycle frame is definitely 8714.91.3 and you are only liable for VAT like you said. But if you have already paid the incorrectly quoted duties it can take about a month to get the money back from customs. Much easier to get Aramex to credit your account for future shipments.

Aramex Global sucks.

Received a parcel from China with TNT in 6 days.

Aramex, cleared customs on the 8th Dec, still waiting, I'm in CT.

TNT and Aramex and DHL are all Express couriers. In other words fast. Great to use if you want your parcel here in 3-4 days. You pay accordingly.

Aramex Global Shopper is a 2nd Tier service. Yes, it takes about 10 days to receive a parcel (on average), but you get what you pay for (and AGS is much cheaper than Aramex Express).

They can only ship your parcel once the fast and expensive express parcels have been shipped. If the airplane is full of Aramex Express parcels, your cheaper parcel has to wait.

Yes, this is a great service most times of the year, but not at Christmas, when the parcel volume is much higher. If you are anxious to receive something fast, rather avoid AGS and go Aramex Express.

.

Personally, I can live with the longer shipping times. After all, AGS is a nice spot in between the post office (3 month wait) and Fedex (costs 3 months of pay)
What pisses me off is the total lack of replies to any emails, nobody answering phones, useless tracking information ("Held in Customs - Awaiting customer instructions" has nothing to do with awaiting instructions from anyone).

It takes complaining on Facebook, twitter, or HelloPeter to get any kind of reply from them. And now reading all the posts above about lost packages and missing/stolen items with little recourse as to claiming from Aramex, I can understand why Aramex has such a bad reputation in South Africa. The issues above don"t seem to be limited to AGS, they are present with Aramex Express too when reading up on HelloPeter.

Ja will also be fine with longer shipping times if they were better at customer service. I honestly think Telkom is better than Aramex at sorting out issues - and that's saying a lot!

They can start by making the call center waiting time 2-5 min. Not 15-30... and then it disconnects. I don't get how its so difficult to manage this area.
