Are Powerline adapters good?

Hi There,
My understanding is that they must be on the same phase but not necessarily on the same breaker. Not being an electrical engineer I can't confirm that though.
However I would not want them on the same circuit as anything drawing sudden large amounts of juice e.g. motors etc as they do put a bit of distortion out

I really want to purchase 2 of these things but I first want to test to see if they'll actually work at my place. Will anyone be kind enough to borrow me theirs for a few hours? Pretty please! :p

I'm considering going for the TL-PA2010K from Uniterm Direct. Was wondering if anyone has experience with online gaming with this model and could provide their feedback? Have checked the electrical wiring in my little flat, all good for a EoP setup.

The other model I'm considering is the D-Link DHP-306 from Sybaritic (http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?products_id=49835). Anyone used this for online gaming?
 
I have the TL-PA2010K. I also have 2x 500Meg units and a normal 200Meg. All of these networked to each other. My son plays online games from PC and Xbox. He has not complained yet, so I would say all is good.

Will these work if I plug the unit into the wall, and then run the ethernet cable into a switch? And then run cables from the switch to the various devices?

The reason I ask, I have my PC and my XBOX and Smart TV with Blu-Ray player all at one plug point (using a multi-plug extension cord).

This seems like an awesome solution, but I really would for all 4 devices to be connected via ethernet.

That's how mine's set up and it works flawlessly.

What switch do u currently use. Looks like my problem is finally sorted. Son will be happy that he can now watch his stuff in his room. Everything will be streamed from the main PC to his Mede8er.

I have 3 powerline adapters plugged into 3 different routers:

1) Netgear DGN2200Mv2 (main router, DHCP and ADSL) (connected to media server computer, media player, Xbox 360)
2) D-Link DIR-320 (connected to media player, gaming PC, bluray player, TV)
3) Linksys WRT54G (connected to media player, TV)

All are WiFi enabled as well so they connect a whole bunch of wireless gadgets.
 
mine are strange. it used to work well but lately it doesnt even create a circuit. if i get a connection im unable to stream. my kids room is next to the lounge and im able to stream from the server. but my room is on the other end of the house. im not sure why the connection has disappeared though.

last night i connected the media player directly to the router with a LAN but couldnt even get it connected to the network. pretty frustrated at the moment.

Did you recently buy or start using something that eats a lot of watts when plugged in? Like an oil heater?

I just confirmed on some other sites (Google I still love you) and people have plugged these into 4 port Ethernet Switches and they still continue to work.

no heaters. are you saying that the more power sucking devices i have the less watts the powerline adapters have? in the lounge currently i have connected to a powersource/s:

1. plasma
2. dstv decoder
3. video
4. dvd
5. ps3
6. adsl router
7. hp microserver

kitchen is normal stuff. the video and dvd is not really used but plugged in though. too much stuff?

I read somewhere that power hungry appliances can cause interference with the adapters. Your appliances shouldn't be an issue though except for the PS3... :p

Will these adapters works for VoIP extensions?
 
Hi There,
As I have said previously these devices will work provided they are on the same phase so if you have 3 phase I would be careful as this is usually "balanced" across phases and may work in some rooms and not in others.
They will work with other networking equipment and I would expect them to work with VoIP. After all it is in effect carrying the LAN signal across a different electrical medium.
