Not as broke as I was last year January, was running a stricter budget through the year, as I will this year, and didn't go too crazy in December. Had a nice holiday that wasn't as expensive as the year before.

Want to save up for a nice holiday this year though, hope petrol doesn't go too crazy again, amongst other things. At least car payments are fixed, so no surprises there.

I find that making up a budget, and sticking to it, helps considerably.

I've seen a great holiday that I really want to go on - a 2 week trip to Russia. Costs about R45000, though, and I'm reluctant to spend that much on a holiday... one day I will go, though.

Back on topic:
No, I'm not broke. I'm interested in why people are in January, though - is it the extra expenses over Christmas (gifts etc) or is it because most people get paid early in December, and don't save it till Jan? Or is it just a bad time of year for appliances and cars?

Are you broke?... I'm asking this question because in 2007 January i was so broke that when i used R50 it mattered, the Jan month felt like it was two months.:D So i would just like to know from myBB who is broke because of December and who is not? :)

cant say i am broke but i guess R1500 should last till end of month:D

i always wonder if we should be paid early or just like normal. i don't see why we should be paid early. we should be paid a day or two early like if your payday falls on 25 Dec.

should we be paid early or should the company pay you as normal and put it upon you to use your money carefully?

I guess it does help those who wouldn't be able to afford holiday gifts and stuff otherwise... but if you get paid early you should just put it aside until your normal payday. The only reason you should get paid early is because the salary department is on leave.

Maybe an idea would be to pay bonuses mid-month (for those places that pay bonuses) and then pay salary as close to normal as possible?

The UK's interest rate is at 1.5% if it where lower in S.A everyone would be doing better.

No!

Remember, higher interest rates will attract foreign currency due to better returns than their local markets and it means citizens with savings can earn enough from them to decently compete against the inflation rate which would erode people savings. Can you understand that?

you say that like 1.5% is a good thing.

it is a sign of desperation. utter desperation...we are now in unchartered waters..let me say it again, NEVER BEFORE IN THE HISTORY OF THE UK havethe interest rates been this low, we do not know what will happen.

an analogy..the bank of england has a lever they pull...up or down (interest rates) and they use this to control the economy. normall half a percent this way or that, like a magic bullet

bank of england is backed into a corner in the room, sweating profusely, he knows he is in trouble, and checking his gun he only has 3 bullets remaining.

but they are all blanks. and what then?

well with me it is like a daily rollercoaster.

I buy lotsa gadgets, then I am broke, cause I like new toys.

The missus chews my ear off and then I sell em all off and recoup the cash , then I have all my money back again.

This has been happening all the way through, currently me in the I have all me cash back cycle, but promised missus no gadget related purchases until april.
