I am with vodacom and am considering porting to Mtn.
3 reasons :
1. Vodacom half owned by Telkom
2. Telling me I'm on the right contract (Weekender) when I don't use up weekend minutes and bill is R600+.(nice one).
3. Nokia n82 R300 pm on Mtn.( R1400 + R400 pm on Vodacom).
4. The uneasy feeling vodacom are trying to take all my money.

Are MTN subscribers generally happy with them ?

I have been with Mtn for about 10 years now and they are average...I have had a lot of drama with them when it comes to payment, they have cut 3 of my phones off numerous times despite paying them well in advance, and then to get them put back on is a serious mission! My dad is adamant that he is cancelling his contract with them as soon as it is up, he really hates them....I am still trying to decide what to do, was considering moving to Vodacom but a bit undecided.

More of the same.
They're like vodacom, bit less congested though.
But everyone is on vodacom so calling them is more expensive.

Phones tend to be a tiny bit cheaper on mtn contracts sometimes, prob trying to win some customers here and there.
Otherwise proudly south african... same old same old.
Better than CellC/VirginM just becuz they have 3G/HSDPA
Otherwise i would argue that they're all just same old same old

I have to disagree... They are a LOT cheaper.

My W960i:
  • R1000 pay-in and +/- R1500-00 per month on Talk1000
  • R0 pay-in and R329-00 per month on ProCall 120

And it has been like this since I got my Vodacom contract about 5 years ago

Okay great! Then its alot cheaper sometimes! I dont mind :)

I have both a vodacom and MTN contract.

I find it easier to activate and deactivate services with Vodacom (using the web portal) than with MTN. I am reasonably happy with both. I find call quality slightly improved on MTN.

I use iTalk for MTN, and they have been fantastic so far. Contract approved hassle free, phone delivered next day and it just worked from then on.

We have both MTN(ME+DAD) + Vodacom(Mom+Sister).
The Mtnsp portal is nice can check all the necessary stuff and deactivate services etc.
Haven't really had any problems with mtn, they give you good warning before cutting off the line and can still access MtnActive portal.
Honour warranty returns, got a new phone when my old 1 died on the 23 month of the contract-24 Month Warranty.

Just struggling to get a data bundle on the mychoice top up, R80-100mb/something.

Get the ProCall 120, my call is a waste.
All calls are mostly included in free minutes.

Vodacom are okay, but they can be arrogant and not give you the necessary information on your contract.
Can't access vodacom4me, they don't even alow they're own sms thru the cut off line.

I Have been with MTN (with the same number) for about 13 years. Never had any type of issue (touch wood), will never go anywhere else.

+1

R49 on MyCall 100 with free SE W810i.

My third SE without any problems so far.

Never had any invoicing problems in last 10 years.

Touch wood. (holding head):)

Been with MTN for about 13 years as well (take note you bastards, you owe a 10 year celebration gift :D) and happy with them. On ProCall120

I have to visit rural areas quite often and find that on average you have better reception with MTN than with the other providers.

I have MTN contract and have had for 10 years+. I would definitely rate them as among the top 3 networks in SA in terms of service quality and staff support. ... iow, average.

Vodacom's support for prepaid (ptcly the web site) is much better than MTN's, but MTN support for contract users is good enough.

Mostly MTN's higher end contracts are nice, and I always feel they have better deals on upgrades.

I have ported to them from Cell-C so anything would feel like an improvement :p

I have been a contract client for 3 years and have only had SE's of which only 1 failed during the last months of warranty/contract and replaced with brand new 1 for free.

My dad has been on MTN Contract for 10 years and had only 2 nokia before switching to SE's and have had 2 since, going for his 3rd.

Does any 1 perhaps know how to do a ME2U from a MyChoice topUp to a Prepaid or get a data bundle on MyChoice TopUp, MTN SP?

MTN's voice contracts are generally cheaper than Vodacom's. My motto is to use MTN for voice, and Vodacom for data.

Not very happy with MTN/MTN SP, right know, i tried loading/enquiring about a data bundle or Me2U Transfer and apparantly it can't be done on this R35 MyChoice Special deal(R75+R30 Airtime), only on normal MyChoice/PrePaid. Can do SMS bundles though.
When i got the package i asked the salesperson, if it is the same as a normal MyChoice TopUp package.
Won't go for this special again, R105=55MB Max. New Special R35=R75 Airtime. Thought there would be a catch somewhere.

I've been with MTN (via MTNSP) for 8 years. I have only 1 issue that I don't really care about any more: for some reason they have never managed to set up a debit order for my account, so I just pay them via internet banking every month. Adding and removing services is quite painless using the MTN Active website, although I think that's only if you use MTNSP. Other SPs probably have their own way of adding and removing services. Overall I have no complaints.

Does MTN have a VIP programme? My mom gets expensive phones with no payins and she pays less the R150 per month. I asked them for a booklet or something to show us the benefits she receives or qualifies for but they didnt give me anything...

What benefits does she qualify for?

Nothing that I'm aware of. I just upgraded (+/- 6 weeks ago) to a TyTN II. No pay-in, but it's about R400/month.

Of course, now the Diamond is out and costs less.... story of my contract upgrade life!

What do you mean on upgrades? I had my MTN contract since 1996. Each time it came to renew I just went ahead as I really had no problems with them at all.

This year however MTN phoned my brother-in-law and offered him a "gift" with his renewal contract. He has been with them since 1998 on my recommendation. So out of interest I phoned them up when my contract was due for renewal and asked them about my "gift"

They tried to tell me that it was for special clients only, and that only certain providers offer things like this  Since we were both with the same SP, I had been there longer, and my monthly bill is usually twice as much.. I told them to stick it.

I didn't even bother porting I just cancelled the number and moved. They tried to convince me that it would be a problem due to now having a new number.. In todays day and age.. who are they kidding. It was as simple as SMS everyone on my phone my new number, and then emailing everyone I wanted to know my new number.

They were good.. But their after sales serviced can kiss my rear end
