Are you phoning a Telkom number?

what i found interesting was a joburg number 011 0xx xxxx.
 
MNO's have been cocking this up since it was introduced. MTN free smses from their site cannot be sent to MTN subscribers with 082 numbers.

Same, IIRC with VC free smses to 083 numbers. Not really sure what the answer is here- perhaps each company should have an easily accessible site like the Telkom one. No graphics etc so can be checked from a cellphone.

Guess they'd fsck that up too though... :(
 
Also easy enough to SMS CellC and MTN people that have ported to 082,the rule on their site just checks for the specific Number blocks ( 082,072 etc ) 1 line of code,no databases
 
Only loser is the paying consumer...

But this is a necessary step on the path to LLU !!!
 
The lookup app on Telkom's site does not seem to "know" about all the numbers. If it can't find it, it says it won't terminate on its network.

Fixed line numbers or cell numbers?
 
If they can have "Welcome Tones" or whatever those things are called, why not have a quick pleasant announcement at the beginning of your call?
"Please wait while your call is routed to the <Insert Operator> Network.", then standard ring ring can carry on.

This sounds like a nice idea! But then again, with the government now fixing the interconnect charges, there will be no reason for an operator to have different charges to different operators. Thus only 2 charges will remain (on-net and off-net). Which means if you year the 3 beeps, you know it is off-net.
 
At least Telkom is trying to assist you. Vodacom has on and off-net tariffs, but how do you tell what network a number is on?

A ported number has 3 beeps as it rings. So if you are calling an ex vodacom 082 number that has ported, and you hear peep, peep, peep. You know that call is not on net.
 
just tired my work number and here we go this is the message

''Telkom Number Verification Result

The number you have entered is not a valid Telkom number and will not terminate on Telkom's network.''
 
@rpm: maybe you should feedback to Telkom that their webhelp ignores all Telkom's DDI/DDO numbers!

Technically DDI numbers are not on Telkom's network but the client PABX - if you know the DN of the PABX it will indicate that the number is on the Telkom network. That said Telkom HQ is (or at least) was on a centrix so the numbers should be defined.
