Article: Centurion power cut caused by vandalism

Last night they said 3 days with no power.

prepare for longer.

A few years ago parts of our substation got burnt coz idiots tried free shopping there.
They (staff) cleaned out the burnt bits on day one.
Then waited for spares.
It took the lion's share of 5 days. 6 hours less than 5 days... Before the repairs were completed.

Do remember that once the parts arrive they(staff) have to start with the repairs/replacement.

The content of my deep freeze got stored at various friends that were not to far, but had electricity. That way I could bother a different friend after work, every day.
(Thank goodness for a small 2 plate gass stove and gass bottle, I could cook warm food :))

Oh and ask at which friends house(s) you may shower/bath!!
And hopefully you have a gas heater(or 2)!

I did feel that it was not fair that our friends end up paying for our cleaning and food storing at their costs, and as such we paid them a lil something for their costs.

Sigh... Any idea of when power will be restored? I'm very frustrated and starting to get angry...

Yah so far they say 3 days including Sunday but who knows really?

Yah.. but how much power do u need for a fridge though? I think minimum would be a 1.2 KW generator and that will just about handle the fridge + 1-2 essential items. :-/

Darn I havent thought of shower problem as my geyser was still hot so was not an issue. Getting a friend's friend to store my food stuff but really not sure how much i can put away.

Look more like a telephone exchange than a power station. I'm not seeing any high tension wiring.

My exact thoughts.. looked at it and was like wtf.. those thin wires can't be right.. but remember Power = Voltage x Current.. with current being a major factor for thickness of wires.

Thinking those are the breakers section.

Get a 5KVA unit, then you can heat the geyser for a couple of hours at the same time your fridge cools down.
Most geysers elements are in the 2000W to 3000W range (similar to kettles).
Fridges don't use much - typically only a couple of hundred Watts for domestic fridges.

Just make sure you don't run high current appliances all at the same time (geyser + kettle + hair dryer).

True but thats like 3k+ on a device i might not need again :-/ the 1.2KW seems okish but esp on from Game but again i'm wondering what i will do with a Generator afterwards

As long as the current economic situation persists, I'm afraid this is only going to get worse.
In the end people are probably going to have to self provision their own electricity (solar PV) and water (boreholes?) because we appear to be heading for another Bulawayo or Harare type situation.

There are syndicates with staff insiders involved in these things.

****EN CU*T*, and they say it might take 3 days to fix. I had to shower at the office gym today

You guys can rent generators as well makes a lot more sense than trying to buy one for a few days.

We are all going to have to get solar geysers PV panels etc because as others have said this will become more and more common.

The last tweet I saw said:

Estimated time to repair the #Brakfontein substation is 2 to 3 days due to cable theft and the serious damage to the substation @Selbybok

By the time they repair the Sub Station, Eskom workers will be on Strike and we will be in Stage 3 Load Shedding (if not worse).....
