Article: Centurion power cut caused by vandalism

Power possibly restored on Tuesday
UPDATE: Damages at Brakfontein substation far worse than initially expected. Power might only return on Tuesday afternoon.

The damages at the Brakfontein substation are so severe that the Tshwane metro had to order cables from Vereeniging in an attempt to restore power.

Mayoral spokesperson, Blessing Manale, remains hopeful that some of the areas that have been affected will be restored by tonight. He said that residents should prepare themselves for regular one to two hour outages throughout the week as they work to restore full functionality at the substation.Manale said that they will be releasing a full report regarding cable theft as it is a severe problem throughout Pretoria.

Councillor Ina Strijdom said that Heuweloord and Monavoni have also been affected by the Brakfontein substation vandalism.Strijdom visited the Brakfontein substation on Monday afternoon and discovered that the damages are more severe then they initially thought. “The underground cables have also been damaged and that is why they had to order new cables from Vereeniging. If we are lucky, power will only be restored by late Tuesday afternoon.”

Dawid Olivier commented on Rekord’s Facebook post that he is totally dependent on an oxygen tank and that he had to rent a generator to keep the tank up and running. Bernadette van der Walt also commented stating that her mother is dependent on electricity for oxygen.“

She is on oxygen 24-hours but luckily I stay close by and she could come to my house to get her oxygen. How many other people are not in the same situation but are not lucky enough to have someone close by? This is not just an inconvenience with the oxygen but also a disruption to her routine with the wound sister who now has to drive to the east of Pretoria to assist with her wounds,” she said.

The areas that have been affected include:
Brakfontein
Rooihuiskraal
Amberfield
The Reeds
Noordwes
Thatchfield
Wierda Park
Heuweloord
Monavoni

Look on the bright side. There will not be a need for load shedding in Centurion for the next few days.

How bad was traffic today with all those robots not working.

I can't imagine how angry I would have been if all the food in my fridge went bad.

FIRE AT CENTURION SUBSTATION

Parts of Centurion were plunged into darkness on Monday after a fire erupted at the Kentron substation, the City of Tshwane said.

The "raging" fire, caused by electrical cable theft, caused power outages in several areas, including the Centurion CBD, Swartkop, Highveld and Ecopark, municipal spokesman Lindela Mashigo said in a statement.

"A team of technicians was dispatched to the scene to investigate the cause and to assess the extent of the damage," said Mashigo.

Repairs to the substation were estimated to take about two days.

The Brakfontein substation was also vandalised on Sunday and caused power outages in the area, including Amberfield, Brakfontein, Heuweloord, Rooihuiskraal North, Thatchfield, The Reeds and parts of Wierdapark.

Affected residents were urged to report power failures to the municipality via text message or calling the municipality.

"Consumers are advised to treat all electrical points 'as live'. Switch off all non-essential appliances to assist with the load on the electrical network," Mashigo said.

"The city apologises for the inconvenience caused. It is unfortunate that the city's residents must endure the disruption of services as a result of criminal actions."

Industria west and the SW side of Johannesburg was without power today.

I heard it was disgruntled contractors who lost their jobs. I hope the police nabs them.

Sabotage, should be shot on sight or if caught later by a firing squad.

Tired of these feckers bringing the country down.

Drove past yesterday on the N1 and could certainly see the scale of the outage, condolences to all (except the crim scum who must die).

Our neighbourhood was without power on Friday for 10 hours, was bad enough.

Anyone have news about whether the power will be back today as scheduled? driving me nuts :(

F**k that's gonna kill everything in my freezer which miraculously has remained frozen till now.

This is not good as it's screwing up a lot of things now.

have you tried asking someone who has electricity to store the frozen stuff.

The rest that defrosted, if still ok, cook various meals and store on the same person's deepfreeze.

when you are ready to eat, cook your rice, pasta etc and warm the food.

It should reduce the wastage you will otherwise experience...

The substation that burnt yesterday there are already some parts in Highveld that are returning. Some places such as Eco Park still in the dark and COULD be for another 2 day's.

Brakfontein only returning Wednesday or Thursday - which is Rooihuiskraal, amberfield ect.
