Article: Freeways are not free: Minister

If the public wants freeways then it has to pay for them, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said on Thursday. "If there is an outcry and people say they won't pay tolls, then we can't put the freeway in," he said at a press conference in Cape Town on Thursday. "Freeways are not free."
 
I know they aren't free! I pay over 35% of my salary to ensure they are built and maintained.

Now I must pay the tolls, which include VAT at 14%. My increase to cover these tolls is taxed at 35%. Add to that fuel levies. Essentially I have now paid 5 times for this f*****g freeway!

Must have missed something. I thought the freeways were already "in" and that they were free as long as you drive a taxi..??

Yeah, and the conditions of monopsony (one buyer for this service, government) mean that the taxpayers get squelched because there's no competitive market process to drive prices down. No wonder their highways cost thousands and thousands per meter or something ridiculous like that...

In any case, how do they justify more than 50% of the petrol price being tax then?

Minister, only if I don't need to pay tax, then you are right.

you know the tax I paid which is not only included the fee of the usage of the highways and also included your salary. :mad:
 
Somebody somewhere is getting very worried that their devious plan to milk the Gauteng Motorists through unnecessary Toll structures might be in danger.

If I'm not mistaken the big banks are major bondholders. But they don't really have to worry, the government will guarantee them just like the Gaushame...

Agreed, the mandate on fuel tax has always been to provide funds to keep transport routes in a good state of repair, and even to improve them.
This F grade baffoon is barking up the wrong tree if he thinks that intelligent people are going to fall for this.
 
How much does it cost to register your vehicle as a taxi? I think that's the best way to go about this..

I'm talking about the person sitting in the shadows who helped to put this whole deal together.
He is not the major financier, but he has organised it so that he now gets a cut of every toll paid.
I want to know who that person is.

Wait for an ANC meeting, close eyes, randomly point finger in their direction. open eyes, whoever your finger is pointing at, has his finger in the pie.

I dont think that there is one person hiding out in the shadows, I think its just the whole organisation finding more ways to fill their joint coffers, which can get laundered into tenders and houses and whatever.

lol no one said you need to actually transport people.. just have your vehicle registered as a taxi, so when you get your etag, you pay nothing for tolls.
