Article: Freeways are not free: Minister

I doubt they will care...

I think they would care... since it would then be possible for you to infringe on their livelihood.
If people start handing out free certificates, I think there will be a big hoo hah.

But it does lead me to the next question....

How do we know that the authority that hands out the taxi registrations is not going to start selling those registrations under the table to all their buddies so tha they can also avoid the tolls?

If the public wants freeways then it has to pay for them, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said on Thursday. "If there is an outcry and people say they won't pay tolls, then we can't put the freeway in," he said at a press conference in Cape Town on Thursday. "Freeways are not free."

By that same logic, any road upgraded or just properly maintained should be tolled. You fscking moron...

Agreed, the mandate on fuel tax has always been to provide funds to keep transport routes in a good state of repair, and even to improve them.
This F grade baffoon is barking up the wrong tree if he thinks that intelligent people are going to fall for this.

Agreed, but intelligent people would not have voted for these morons in the first place.

It gonna cost me an extra R1400 a month to use these highways. That's not gonna fly when the roads are already falling apart!! The N1 sucks, it just going to create mayham. So, who's co-ordinating a strike??

I'm sorry but this is getting beyond unacceptable.

Ndebele said the "user-pay principle" was accepted throughout the world, but in South Africa people were willingly prepared to pay only in the telecommunications sector.

NO. No. No. No. No. NO.

You know what Ndebele? IF taxes were handled correctly and funds were spent correctly on facilities and maintenance, like it should, and a new highway was required and tolls were to be added to cover the cost, I would gladly accept.

BUT since the dogshow you call government mishandles, embezzles and steals taxes, I will not roll over and pay more for something that could have easily been paid for with prior/future acceptable taxation or with FUEL LEVIES.

They already do. I have seen countless Mercs, Beemers and Toyota's - all sedans - with the taxi coloured number plates.

Most of the voters are sitting in taxis that travel for free anyway. I am hoping that at least 60% of the ones left, that use their own personal car, are intelligent enough to not fall for this.

I don't understand how a bus/taxi can be free but a car isn't, so then Freeways are not free but only for normal people not taxis/busses cause they are special in some or other way...

They'll pay when the prices for goods and services they purchase rise to cover the new expense of the tolls...

Cause some pigs are more equal than others.

We know, that is why we pay fuel levies:(

But the taxes of fuel no longer are allocated to roads. They go into the general budget to pay for whatever, Zuma's house etc.

If the fuel tax levies just went to roads, you wouldn't have tolls.

But seriously guys, anyone know of serious efforts to co-ordinate a strike?

The best way to strike is not to use them. Lets really block up the alternate routes, which are already in such bad repair that they too will cost them more money to maintain.
