Article: I am not a free agent: Manuel

Outgoing Planning Minister Trevor Manuel is not a free agent and is still a member of the ANC, he told Power FM on Wednesday.

"I have been able to demonstrate that I am in fact not a free agent but a member of the ANC...if he [Gwede Mantashe] does not like me as member of the ANC, well, he is just a functionary of the ANC after all," Manuel told Power FM presenter Tim Modise during an interview.
 
Maybe we should rather blame RPM's grammar than Manuel.

"I have been able to demonstrate that I am in fact not a free agent but a member of the ANC..."

vs

"I have been able to demonstrate that I am in fact not 'a free agent' but a member of the ANC..."

I'm not sure if my own grammar is correct, but I think he simply quoted Mantashe.

That's when they will label Trevor a racist, and not just any racist, but a white racist. They will quickly bring his race and colour into the equation. They will also blame all the country's current economic woes on him, and these woes will be labelled the "legacy of DA's Trevor". They will do whatever it takes to discredit him, no matter how loyal he was. That's the typical cANCer response. No morals, ethics, or sense of gratitude for his previous service. I'd be very surprised if things turned out any differently than described above.

Mantashe likened Manuel to former Cabinet ministers Jay Naidoo and Ronnie Kasrils whom he said had a lot to say now that they were no longer in government.

Seems to happen a lot now that the ANC's eyeblind is wearing thin.

Still, they were all part of the problem, helped create the monster, but now that the s.h.t.f they're scattering like rats off a sinking ship. Not a very noble lot if you think about it.
