He probably didnt even write the statement.
That sounds way too formal and grammatically correct for him to have written it."Contrary to the sentiment expressed by some, which sentiment I believe is misplaced and unreasonable, I do not sing liberation songs with any intent to be hurtful... or propagate hatred," he said in a witness statement.

As much as it pains me to say this and I can't stand the guy, I still try to put my feelings aside in most things and my judgement leads me to think he is being sincere and truthfull. I think he's young, hot headed and arrogant but I don't think he's intentionally trying to incite violence.

The media have also had a hand here, just recently they've been accused and proven guilty of blatantly putting words in his mouth.
Bleh who knows but personally I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Before this incident with the media I would've thought differently but not anymore.
South Africa
In South Africa, Act No. 4 of 2000: Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act contains the following clause:
10. (1) Subject to the proviso in section 12, no person may publish, propagate, advocate or communicate words based on one or more of the prohibited grounds, against any person, that could reasonably be construed to demonstrate a clear intention to -
(a) be hurtful;
(b) be harmful or to incite harm;
(c) promote or propagate hatred.[23]
The crime of crimen injuria ("unlawfully, intentionally and seriously impairing the dignity of another")[24] may also be used to prosecute hate speech.[25
Interesting twist to the saga.
