Article: Master athlete euthanised at 95

If I were to be on my way out ... I would at least wait for the pain to start (and also the prognosis from numerous doctors) ... before I would even think of offing myself.

This is why I don't agree with euthanasia, where do you draw the line? So many people could make the wrong decision and off themselves out of fear of the disease. Albeit, at 95 he's had a pretty good run (pun?).

committed euthanasia... what an odd turn of phrase.

Considering there is a doctor or some other certified healthcare professional performing the procedure on you the word doesn't fit for me. Sure you consent to the euthanasia but you consent to surgery too and we don't say you performed or committed surgery, you elected to have surgery.

I also don't agree with Euthanasia in it's current form (albeit young and unevolved). But with certain rigid practices in place, even I as a Christian, can't find fault with it.

We thought so too, which is why I steered clear of it in the headline (even though AP published the story under "95-year-old athlete commits euthanasia").

Couldn't think of a better verb, so I ended up just going with euthanised.

Ah yes I see the heading is different. Glad I'm not the only one battling with the idea of committing euthanasia :p. 'Euthanised' is the usage I'm most familiar with. Seems to roll off the tongue better.

Anyway... enough of my derail... carry on.

Wait-wait, you were saying something about battling with euthanasia ... please go on. We would like to hear it.

Who's to say their decision was wrong? It was their decision to make, not yours or anyone else's...

Why does there need to be a line? I could be perfectly healthy yet I should still be able to off myself if I want to, nothing to do with you.

Grin-grin ....

Now that I have been spotted for spotting it ... would you care to continue?
I'm just saying I battle with the concept of someone committing euthanasia. Euthanasia is like surgery in that it is something done to someone, not something one does to oneself. Just like one elects to undergo surgery as opposed to performing surgery (only the doctor performs the surgery), one doesn't commit euthanasia but instead undergoes euthanasia or is euthanised.

It works for suicide (e.g. committing suicide) because that is something active that one does to oneself.

Sorry to disappoint but this was just me thinking out aloud about the semantics of the turn of phrase. I am not contemplating euthanasia. :p

Agreed. Your body, your choice. Unless of course you are mentally unfit to consent. We can't have 5 year olds electing to undergo euthanasia because they think it sounds like a procedure that will turn them into a robot. :p

No doubt others will join young Scotty's voice soon, to impose themselves on others' lives and pretend to give a crap by subjecting others to years of pain and suffering. Why? Because they're incapable of drawing a line for themselves...

the Afrikaans "pleeg" (which generally translates as commit but there is a nuance) works quite well in my mind

Sorry to disappoint

Aww damn, for a moment there I thought that in the foreseeable future we would be rid of your wise-ass-crack-comments.

EDIT: Goes without saying ... just kidding.
