Article: Motorist arrested for R200 bribe

A 28-year-old motorist was arrested for allegedly giving a traffic officer a R200 bribe in Midrand on Sunday, Johannesburg metro police said.

Everyone has his price, it's just a matter of negotiations, I bet the cop would have take the money if it were R20000.

But the driver is an idiot, one can't do much with R200 these days

"The man had been stopped for speeding at 170km/h at a 120km/h zone on the N1 north
at around 2am, spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said."

What speed trap technology do cops use @ 2am in the morning?

I was coming back from a place in Randburg.

I'd been there 4 hours and had 4 single Jameson/water and a shot.

I was pulled over, blew and was over the limit. I bribed him to leave.

Now most forumites fought, moaned and complained about me bribing him - but would you not do the same?

If I was over, it would have so close - and chances are reasonable I'm not (considerin the time). Do I put my foot down, demand he take me to the police station, draw blood and more inconveniences because I may be right / wrong?

I'm happy he acceptd a bribe in my case *shrug*

How much did you pay? I need to know the going rate, it could come handy if I'm in similar position.

I know this is how lots of people think, Dolby, but I disagree.

Remember you may have been only slightly inebriated, but the next guy who bribes the cop, may be totally drunk ..... you may think it is OK to bribe a traffic officer to let a drunk driver go, but how would you feel if that drunk driver drove on and hit a pedestrian?

And how would you feel if that drunk driver is charged with an offense, and he then proceed to bribe a SAPS officer to make the docket disappear? Is that still OK?

Yeah, this is the problem. If someone I knew was killed by a drunk driver because a police officer accepted a bribe...

Personally I think they need to RAISE the blood alcohol limit so that it allows an average size person to have 1 or 2 drinks and be allowed to drive. One draught beer maybe. Right now, its pointlessly stringent as it basically means you cant even have a single shot of anything alcoholic if you want to get behind the wheel of a car in the next few hours. I think it leads to more people saying F it, I'll try my luck.

But they need to enforce the penalties more stringently and with less bribery.

EDIT: Its also somewhat ironic when we moan about the government being corrupt but at the same time all love bribing cops. We are also to blame for the dishonesty in this country if thats our attitude. What attitude do you think that cop will have towards corruption if he rises up the ranks and becomes minister of police?

My point is there is a large chance that I wasn't over the limit. But my choice is :

a) Fight and prove my innocence
b) Pay him off

Even if it's morally wrong, most be do b) - even if it's morally wrong.

He was bullying and catching easy targets

Even if it's morally wrong, most be do b) - even if it's morally wrong.

But if it is morally wrong and people do it anyway, would you agree that those people are henceforth in no position to judge others on their morals or lack thereof?

And where do you draw the line about what kind of things we can bribe SAPS or traffic officers for?

People like Dolby is part of the problem.

See what the general mentality of the MyBB crowd are?

Sad really that people can't expand and think a little further

You can't draw the line - I agree.

We all should stand-up against drunk driving and bribery.

Not sure why you think that is a bad mentality.

But what if I was - in fact - 0.48 and under the limit?
So not drunken driving - but rather wrongful arrest on their side?
Lawyers, money, court, arrest, still sit in a cell that night?

I'm sure you'd stand up and be prepared to fight for the rights - but I'd rather give a small something and go home. We're not all as angellic as you.

You are still part of the problem.
