Article: Motorist arrested for R200 bribe

All right then. Continue drinking and driving then. Just one favour, please post when you are going to be doing this so the rest of us can be off the road when you are on it.

you cant argue the points presented, so you just spit out an overly done, frankly pointless post.
Good job.

Oh yes the saints ! (Amen !) Yes the saints ! (My lord !) Those saints come marching in ! ....

Nobody is saying anyone should get drunk and drive. But a few drinks at the pub (2-3 ?)and straight home is not akin to being a terrible person. Or we sure live in a country of bastards.

all of that from the first drink? Really? but they let you drive after 1 drink...thats very reckless of them...

You do know that you 1 drink an hour is not that likely to bring on these things you are talking about? Especially when mixed with water?
Add a meal to that, and you are probably sober..

As I said, studies have shown that impairment begins from the first drink. I'm not saying people should not drink only that they should stop being selfish and think that alcohol does not effect them then get behind the wheel and take other peoples lives in there hands. Hell, I like to have the odd beer now and then, I don't care if it does or doesn't make me drunk, I'm not going to get behind the wheel after having a few beers, period.

A 28-year-old motorist was arrested for allegedly giving a traffic officer a R200 bribe in Midrand on Sunday, Johannesburg metro police said.
Good - this guy, and those like him, deserve what's coming to them.

and ur still missing the point..
his chances of being impaired after 4 w&w in 4 hours are not that likely. As he is stating, he was prob on the limit or just below of what they legally allow.

Oh, and studies have also shown how badly impaired you get when driving with lack of sleep.
Anything and everything can mess you up giving the right circumstances and volume.

The point here, is that you are going on a holier than thou crusade, when actually you are not hearing his point of view. I agree driving when drunk is plain stupid and idiotic, but thats not the case we are arguing

I dunno. Depends if you kill anyone on the way or not. Because, if you do, and they do a bloodtest and you turn out to be over the limit -- it's tickets for you. And you family, who will quite probably end up paying the legal, medical and insurance costs for the deceased while you're sitting in jail for manslaughter.

Yes, it's not really likely to happen. But it's worth taking into consideration before you think to yourself, "Oh, 2-3 drinks won't hurt..."

That's precisely my point - thank you for understanding.

And the alternative was that if I didn't give him money (which he was clearly looking for) I'd face a (wrongful) arrest, night in a cell, bail, laywers and everything else that goes along with it - when there is a good chance I'm innocent.

Yes - I could fight it ... but I'd rather have paid R300.00 once off than go through the legal mess for the next few months.

It means that from the first drink you start acting like a moron, have no inhibitions, no sense of consequence, and are incapable of making any kind of judgment calls. .

Sorry but this is bull!

I regularly go out for dinner with my lady and we will share a bottle of wine maybe top off the meal with an Irish Cofffee, wich i believe is everybody's right to do.
It certainly doesnt make me act like a moron, reduce my inhibitions, or impair my judgement, however it may make me infringe some restriction by some minor percentage.
It no ways makes me a threat or a danger on the road.

If i landed up in situation such as Dolby and others have mentioned, after such an evening out, i do know i would not hesitate to ask the cop in question if i could pay a "spot fine".
It would be up to the policeman in question to decide whether or not to right me up a reciept for the "spot fine" or not.

You cant be arrested for bribery for offering to pay a spot fine.

A.Beer.Won't.Kill.Anyone.

It won't send you 4 times over the limit.
It won't make you unconcious.
It won't give you alcohol poisoning
It won't alter your mind entirely.

I was asked - I didn't offer.

The breathlyser wasn't sealed not opened in front of me.

It was not a roadblock either ; it was two cops pulling off random cars on the side of the road.

EDIT : Quoted wrong part of the paragraph.

U have a very valid point. rather than risk just being over or on the limit..take a cab or go eat something. I fully agree, because if you kill someone, like you said, its over.
Not just a DUI, its murder...and that is life over

Ah yes. Thing is, when someone is drunk, as shown by studies, that someone may not even be aware that he is drunk. They did a study where they took some people and asked them to do a standard road test, in which the study group all passed, then they gave them 1 drink each and asked them to do the test again. Guess what happened? All failed the test. Shocking isn't it?

Well it's culpable homicide. But what about 2 or 3 beers is going to make you kill anyone ? Maybe I'm special but that amount of booze in me over an hour or two has no effect.

I remember in university they came to make a point about drunk driving. Being a student and offered free booze of course I volunteered. They made me play a lap of Gran Turismo on the playstation1 and recorded the time. Then we were given 4 beers to down quickly then we were asked to play again. I beat my time the second time while the rest failed hopelessly. Now in no ways do I suggest that that's ok to do. For most people that would smash them to bits. But my point is not everyone has the same tolerance for booze. It's needs to be a bit more subjective.

For me I employ the hand test. If I go for a Pee and the hand is coming out to prop myself against the wall, it's time to call someone to drive me home. He he. But seriously we just need a balance in the system. The old walk the line test perhaps. Alcohol in blood seem to not be an accurate measure of someones physical and mental capacity.

1 drink certainly would not make someone fail a road test. Not me anyway. If anything 1 drink would just take the edge if nerves off to ensure I performed better.

That is a classic alcoholic response. I'm not saying you are an alcoholic, just that it is a classic response.

Can you show me this test please? I honestly dont believe it, 1 drink? all of them failed? If this was so, then the law would be no booze at all. Dont you think?

2-3 beers may not make u kill someone, but what if a pedestrian walks in the road? someone jumps a robot? You will be liable, no matter what, because you are over the limit.
U are comparing driving to playing gran turismo? by that logic my nephew who is 7 is a flawless driver. I get you are trying to say that the beer didnt affect you, but it does...just not in the amounts Ronjay seems to think.

How do i know if i need a cab? If it even crosses my mind that I might need a cab...

Do you drink?

You have massive, incorrect ideas about alcohol and quantites

I think he's saying all that won't matter if you are involved in an accident where you're then found to be technically over the limit.

Keep spouting garbage...
U have no clue what you are talking about
