A motorist was fined R40,000 on Monday by the Tongaat Magistrate's Court for travelling at 216km/h in a 120/h zone, the department of transport said.
The 23-year-old Kavilyn Govender's driving licence was also suspended for six months, said spokesman Logan Maistry.

This massive fine is really quite evil. Whatever happened to proportionality? Governments are out of control. They think the world belongs to them and we the people are their serfs. Roll on the revolution.

The bail for suspects in violent crime should therefore be increased too.
The more expensive your car, the less expensive your fine will be....
Why? Set it at R500 and most of them won't be able to pay anyway. This douche was obviously able to afford a nice, fast, expensive car -- who knows, maybe the fine will force him to sell it and downgrade to a Fiat Uno.

Save your hate for criminals, not guys that like to have a bit of fun. And before you go off about people dying due to speed etc you have no idea from that article what the conditions etc were. You can guess that at 216 and a 120 zone it was probably a pretty open road.

Everyone always moans about speeding and how it kills, but its not excessive speed that kills its idiotic driving. If the road is empty and its well lit, your vehicle is roadworthy and capable of speed I dont see the harm in having some fun.
If however the driver was causing harm to anyone else on the road, swerving in and out of traffic etc etc then yes, he should be fined.
I have been driving pretty fast for most of the few years I have had my licence and I can guarantee that I have probably got a better driving record than the majority of the guys on here complaining about speeding drivers.
...difference between you and myself is that I know the limits of mine and my vehicles capabilities.

You want to tell me that if a tyre blows out at 216km/h you will put your driving skills into play and prevent a fatality? You may be a skilled driver but accidents do happen, most of the time you get someone else killed aswel. I also like to drive fast but within limits.
Exactly. Hit a wall at 260km and then get out and tell me excessive speed doesn't kill......
People with so much confidence in their own driving ability as to justify 200km plus speeds usually are the worst drivers around.
