Article: SAA dumps food

Employees of Air Chefs, a division of SA Airways, are facing disciplinary action following the dumping of mounds of food, the Sunday Times reported.

In one weekend in December, Air Chefs dumped 840 lemon meringues, 250 cheese snack foccacias, 300 turkey croissants, almost 1000 bread rolls and 150 millefeuille desserts, the newspaper reported.

Food used to go to charities, but this was stopped because unions demanded transparency in the selection of the charities.
:wtf:
SAA attributed the wastage to ordering too much food, pilfering, fraud and inadequate stock control.

For which we as tax payers need to cough up

The unions REALLY need to be brought to their knees in this country

my god, where was i when this happened :D

sick. how twisted do you have to be to just throw away so much food! especially in this country. pull up to any traffic light and see little children begging for food.
they didn't even have to make too much of an effort, just call up some charities and tell them to come fetch. I'm sure they will be happy to.
the person who gave the order to dump so much food must be one cold sob

Many corporates in this country dump food. It's a health and safety issue, if someone gets sick from the food or claims that the food made them sick... Big trouble.

that's understandable but why wait till the food is spoilt them dump it. I know a local woolies that removes all food on t the sell by date and gives it to a local old age home. food is still good, just. cos of the date it cannot be on the shelf. a little planning and nothing new to go to waste

This is not just SAA, once a flight is over, any food onboard is removed by the catering company, the next flight gets a fresh batch of food. It is indeed an H&S issue.

However, there is generally nothing wrong with the food, so it could be donated to a charity or shelter, like WW does.

What's wrong with wanting full transparecy? Unless that's being interpreted as something along the lines of that stupid act (which was squashed) regarding giving donations to black organisations only.

I dont understand this...

Theyre asking for transparency and now its their fault?
