Article: SAA dumps food

What's wrong with wanting full transparecy? Unless that's being interpreted as something along the lines of that stupid act (which was squashed) regarding giving donations to black organisations only.

For any business it means higher admin costs, so it's cheaper to dump it than it is to give it away. (nevermind the health and safety aspects)

SAA attributed the wastage to ordering too much food, pilfering, fraud and inadequate stock control.

Yeah, 'cos there's no accountability when you've got government to cover your back!

We've tried to donate food from the canteen. Nobody will touch it. The closest that you can get is as swill for pigs. SAA can't even do that because of the packaging.

It seems sinful but what can you do?

Speak to some charities, i am sure they will be more than willing to take it off of your hands.

Tried. Nobody will touch it.

I think some folk have got away with bread. And I think Woolies have shifted some stuff prior to Use By Date.

The trouble is the health and safety risks that you open yourself up to. 99.999% of the time you will have no problems but it takes a single case and you're screwed.

It is a pity because perfectly reasonable food goes to waste and so many people are starving.

Yup. This is the world we live in. You're very naive if you think this is SAA's doing. A lot of food gets wasted on a daily basis practically everywhere.

Many corporates in this country dump food. It's a health and safety issue, if someone gets sick from the food or claims that the food made them sick... Big trouble.

Same happens in the US and EU too. The food if not handled properly or expired can be a health hazard, or even more likely a lawsuit hazard.
