Asterisk gate relay (or something)

I have been googling for a while and haven't found any solid answers yet.

I want to be able to open an electric gate with Asterisk.
I know that the gate works (probably like most gates) with relay switches and just having the switch loop opens the gate (not sure about my terminology).

The idea I have of doing this was along the way of having a FXS card in the box, with a telephone line connected all the way to the relay switch. Then set up an extension that phones the FXS port. I'm not great with electronics and after a bit of thought into it, I could probably just short things out like that.

Have anyone here done a similar set up to open gates?
