I received this SMS today " You have been successfully authenticated with MTN. If this doesn't sound right, please contact us at 083 135." I have no idea what this is about. I haven't upgraded, applied for another contract or requested a SIM swap so I don't have a clue what has been authenticated or why.

Calling 135 doesn't even give you the option to talk to a consultant and even tried MTN on social media, but no response.

Anyone have an idea what this could be?

Have you found out what it was about? I got the same SMS today, right after one that said "Your MTN authentication has failed. For more info or help, please chat to your agent."

Got a reply from MTN on twitter: "You receive that notification if we are assisting with something on your number on our systems, if you did not contact us it might happened that they entered a wrong number."

No, I haven't heard a peep from MTN despite multiple tries to DM/Tweet them.

Hopefully it's just the wrong number thing.

I also received an SMS yesterday... And again today... Exact same wording...
Any of the previous posters.... Is everything ok since receiving the msg?

When you go into an MTN store they ask you a bunch of security questions and send a pin to your cellphone... somewhere during this process you receive the SMS saying "You have been authenticated"

In my case it was during a SIM swap.

Mine was a SIM swap as well, not by myself. It was for a another phone on my contract. It was an official MTN SIM swap by someone at MTN, located in a city far away. Within 45 minutes I was at my local MTN store to reverse the SIM Swap back to my ownership. This reversal did not happen and my Nedbank account was cleaned out by the time I got back home. I have logged the MTN "fraud department"(never a human) but have never heard back. Can only imagine that they are inundated with this sort of thing. Surely they are not ignoring me?

I can only ask. As the fraudulent SIM swap was performed by MTN themselves(I have the ref number), are MTN complicit in the fraud? Are they responsible in some way for my Nedbank account having been cleaned out?
