Hi guys, as soon as I took delivery of my Gti 6 I went to check how much the 18" tyres cost. The highly recommended Michelin cost R4000 each and my favourite Continentals are selling at R3800 per tyre. So I shopped around and came across Yokohama and Dunlop and auto style for R1550 and R980 respectively. How good or bad are these tyres? I got the car with two Dunlops at the back and two Good year's in front. And it drives very well and handles fine. Would you suggest that I stick with the Dunlops and get Yokohamas? Why are they so cheap compared to the Contis and Michelins? And the Yokohamas at Tiger wheels were selling at R3000 per tyre. Are the tyres at Autostlye real?

You get cheap tyres and you get expensive tyres.
Tyres are also rated for performance, speed, and based on the compound used (for rain/dry/mixed, etc).

I was quoted just under 4k for tyres for a 245/45R18 and those are standard prices for performance tyres.

Contis and Michelins are pretty expensive... or well here at least. In the UK you can get Michelins that I use for less than half the price they go for here.

As to Autostyle's tyres being real... dunno. Maybe they get them for cheap, maybe they do grey imports, maybe they fell off the back off the truck, or maybe they're fake.

Fake is my biggest worry. I love driving fast at times . And I need real tyres for that. I guess I'll just have to stick with "my" trusted dealers. The current tyres are fairly new and I was thinking of buying two and keep them and get another two later.

If you don't need the tyres now wait for the rand to get stronger as most of our tyres are imported.

Why did your car have different tyres? 2 sets that were not standard with the car. Strange.
I'm also skeptical about Autostyle tyres, I'm sure they real, just skeptical, then again Malas and Mintys are just as cheap.
Contis are not the best option.
Yoki A drives are hard, S drives are good.
Dunlops are generally crap.

If I were you, I'd get a set of 19" wheels, Helios, ed35 reps, BBS etc and Yoki S drives!

never knew about fake tyres but i run the Autostyle online side of things.

I can assure you our tyres are legit. We are one of Yokohama's largest buyers hence the lower prices. In fact they are one of the headline sponsors for our upcoming motorshow. Still not convinced, ask em :) http://www.yokohama.co.za/Contact.htm

same goes for Dunlop, Pirelli, etc. We tend to bulk buy on popular sizes to secure much better pricing

Bought plenty from auto style. From car sound to accessories. Their stuff is legit.

I have been running 19" tyres on my A6 for years. I got tired of Michelin prices (R5300 per tyre) so hunted around when I last changed. Saw mention of Hancook so did some research.
Found in Europe they are a strong competitor to Michelin and with very good reviews.

Found Mintys in Bedfordview sold them for R2,500 per tyre for the sports. Had a set put on a and not looked back. Really good tyres. I can't tell the difference between them and the Michelin.

Size is 255/35/R19 BTW.

EDIT: Gave Kumo a try with my last A6. Lasted a week and had them taken off. Real rubbish (at least back then).

Naeem why does autostyle only do stuff for older cars? I feel like I'm being discriminated against because I don't drive a citi golf or tazz. I don't see anything newer than about 2005.

@Rorzor

numerous reasons, discrimination is not one of them (why do saffers always like to use this term?)

- supply and demand - newer car owners simply do not want to buy accessories for their vehicles because
a) its their primary vehicle and dont want to experiment or do stuff to it
b) not in the budget
c) motorplan/warranty issues, some manufacturers are very strict on aftermarket modifications
d) no demand, eg. we'll keep stuff for a Mk6 Gti (a few bits and pieces) but unlikely to stock the same for say a Kia Rio.
Both cars are quite popular and sell well in SA but we get 100 times more queries for Mk6 stuff then we would get for a Kia.

Just to clarify on the tyres. AFAIK there are NO fake tyres in SA. No such thing as a fake pirelli or fake yokohama. Sure it could have fallen of a truck or if second hand from a stolen vehicle. With grey stock, its ironically the other way around. Some companies sell tyres that are marked for export. These tyres are generally cheaper as they get tax breaks and incentives to boost our export. However its illegal to sell these locally. This was an issue about 10+ years ago, not sure if its still relevant these days.

Most people don't want to ruin their new cars with after market garbage. ;)

Autostyle is awesome. I have used them for load of stuff. It's sort of a warehouse setup and they must push huge volumes, just be prepared for queues if you go on a Saturday.

and my favourite Continentals

You have a "favorite tyre"? :wtf:

The sooner you guys realize you guys are wasting tons of cash on a piece of rubber the better.
It's just a tyre people. a tyre!

R16,000 for 4 tyres? surely there is something better you can spend your money on?

Or maybe i'm just silly here and some people are such big tyre fans they'd watch a movie featuring a tyre.

I watched a documentary on the Michelin tyre I used to use before going Hancook. Was freaking good and helped me understand why they are so freaking expensive.

But ye - it is important to know your tyres and that would lead to having a favourite. After all - they are the only things between staying on and going off the road.

Right now - my favourite is the Hancook.

The car styling trend was really strong around that time. Nowadays it is a lot harder to bolt on aftermarket parts, especially for styling. The market just isn't what it used to be. The trend seems to be big rims and stupid drop suspension.

I also don't get "favourite tyres" but R16k is pretty much average for a decent tyre set on a high performance car. The tyre needs to be at least as good as the rest of the car (which is good for 200+) and as Mike said at any given time its only minute pieces of rubber holding you on the road. Any cheap thing will do for a tazz but you want something decent on a faster car.

Its funny when people buy cars like a GTI and then complain about the price of tyres.
