Hi,

Just done the route from PMB to Durbs and did a small stretch of it (10km) at a higher speed than the speed limit. (No excuse other than that I was late for a meeting and the road was fairly clear)

I am well aware that we have average speed monitoring here in KZN and I know how it works.

What concerned me was the number of cameras on the side of the road - one every 2km or so.. (Two cameras on a pole suspended over the road)

I'm not sure if these are for surveilance or average speed. If they are for average speed I could have a problem...
To be honest I had thought that the average speed measuring points were much further apart (at leat 8km or so)

Anyone know the answer?

I drove to Durban the other day and everyone with ND, Nxxx plates seemed to be speeding. I wasn't sure if they knew something I didn't (maybe the system wasn't functional yet). But the speed limit was 80 and everyone came speeding up behind me at 100km/h+

Anyway never saw any of the cameras flash they sped past. The signs also say they don't prosecute based on speed instead average speed is used.

Yeh that's just it, I don't think the average speed cameras flash, they can however recognise your number plate at 130km/h and if they can do that, it's enough information to get you a fine based on your time between measurement points.

Now that you mention it I came in from Joburg last night at 120km/h (120 zone) and I had people going past me like I was standing still so maybe there's hope. Don't get me wrong, I don't advocate speeding but the fine for even a 5km/h infringement in an average speed zone is stiff..

The average speed cameras are between the Ashburton and Camperdown bridges after that the rest of the cameras are surveilance cameras on the way to Durban,

That would be exceptional news, I only gave it a bit after the BP Oasis at Cato Ridge through to the bottom of the Peacevale hill.

My Cuz got me a R500 fine at ladysmith for the average speed, and not over by much. lol shouldnt have let him take over driving duties,

I think they are definitely average speed cameras. Drove down the N3 in September, and even my GPS warned me of average speed trapping when going past the camera's on the booms.

On British motorways where there are roadworks, there are well signposted temporary average speed cameras and the limit is 50 mph. I had a hire car and even though I tried to limit it to 55mph, cars were whizzing past me. About a month after I got back, the car hire co send me a notice they received from the Roads Agency instructing me to attend a "road rage reconciliation course" or have a 3 point demerit on my driving licence. I wrote back to them and told them I was living in SA and to please send me the airfare and I would attend. 6 months later a notice arrived saying that the request had been shelved. Wan***s

Those mounted on poles are unlikely to be avg speeds cams. The angle is all wrong imo. They are used for monitoring afaik...& for some reason they are mostly stationed near bridges. I suppose the idea is they get to monitor another road as a bonus.

Orbit you are worried about speedcams when we have land invasions, corruption, nepotism, crime etc. When or if maybe you get the summons piss on it.

Cops still trap alot near Camperdown. Average speed camera's or not. And yes they do work.

I am driving down to DBN tomorrow.

Last year I got 1 Average Speed ticket. IT was R2500. Cannot remember the area but was somewhere pass half way to DBN.

On my last trip earlier this year I did see signs that say Average Speed from here, but they do not have a sign where it ends.

It is very confusing as well as you see other drivers just going by at normal speeds.

Fixed cameras no problem with Garmin and Mobile Trapping not an issue at all for me.

A flaw in the cameras.... They can't track you if you change lanes.

This is a problem in the UK too.

Bwahahaha!!! :D:D:D:D

This made my day!!! :D:D:D

apparently the people charging past us in the average speed trapping zone have figured out that if you slow down enough before the cameras at either end, you won't get caught. :D

the other thing i wonder about is the cameras on the taxi lane on the m4 and n3 in and out of durban. if that works, then they must be making a fortune in fines. but something tells me it's silver painted toilet roll tubes with clingwrap over the end, because it's been a while now and i still see about tons of people in that lane when i go to/from work.

How true is this? It seems such an easy way to avoid detection...
I have family living in the UK. None have received speeding fines as yet.

My one brother worked on the installations/upgrades of a few of those cameras(electrician), he was also part of the team that upgraded the heathrow cameras a while ago...

No ways bru, do you have a source for that?

Anyways, I also find that when they do roadworks, they put up dummy cameras to scare you into driving like a granny. I've driven past them at way over the temporary speed limit (of 60km/h which is ridiculous when you still have 2 full lanes free) and nothing ever happens.

See my post above your post

Edit: once you have left a lane, speeding. You cannot return to it for a few cameras. = sometimes you have to keep to the speedlimit inbetween.

Can ask for best method to be used. Never really bothered 'cause when I go to the UK I don't bother renting a car as I always live/visit with family.
