Hello everyone.

For the past couple of months, I have been having serious issues with my 4Mb uncapped Telkom adsl line. These issues may or my not have been Telkom's fault, but I have reached the point where I don't want to have anything to do with them ever again.

This leads to the question of which alternative isps I should consider. After doing some research, I've decided that Axxess and Afrihost look like the best options. They also seem to have 8Mb packages for the price of my 4Mb at the moment. Is this legit or are there some hidden costs? I would love to hear people's opinions on these two isps (as well as others, if they are good).

I live in Stellenbosch (if that is relevant) and I am definitely a power user who is constantly downloading games and streaming movies, so throttling will be an issue.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you have the budget then the 8Mbps Axxess Premium Uncapped is what you want:

Hi! :)

There are definitely no hidden costs on our packages, the price you see for the product is the price you will pay. You do mention that throttling will be an issue, so make sure you then look at least the Premium Uncapped package, which is a shaped product. We'll only shape your P2P and HTTP downloads during peak-times, streaming, browsing, gaming, etc will remain unaffected.

Our Home Uncapped accounts are throttled once you've hit the threshold over a 30-day rolling window.

We need your usage a month. You also need to check what line speed you can get before going up to a 8mb/s line http://www2.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/check.htm

I always recommend Capped accounts they are in most part better then uncapped and with capped accounts you get uncapped from 12pm-6am. You don't get throttled on capped accounts and you can download as much as you want from 12pm - 6am.

I have been on Axxess 300gig package for a year and normally use between 600-700 gigs a month on a 10mb/s line. I haven't had a warning, throttling, complaint and every time I have checked my downloads are 900kb/s + (I'm getting 90-100% of what my line is capable of every day for a year).

When it comes to Axxess vs Afrihost, Afrihost is cheaper because of Afrihost plus but I wouldn't be a big fan of them managing my line. Axxess has had their problems with managing lines but haven't seen a complaint like that for a while. Both Axxess and Afrihost have many happy users.

For managing lines I would recommend Crystal Web their support is easily the best of all ISP's in South Africa.

I have always thought Axxess is Afrihost (they use the same network) but without the problems. Dunno how they do it but they produce, Axxess has also been the top rated ISP for over a year and again this quarter http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/174116-best-and-worst-adsl-isps-in-south-africa-3.html

Thanks for the replies

Thank you, Scary_Turtle. Your post was very informative and remove all doubts I had about switching ISPs.

Tomorrow I shall try to get my landline number from Telkom (I forgot it and didn't write it down) and then I shall switch over to Axxess. Hopefully this marks the end of my business with Telkom.

I am looking to switch over to Axxess 4mb premium uncapped. Anybody care to share their experience as I am being throttled to death with Vox 4mb home uncapped. I stream ALOT, little to no p2p, mainly Kodi and supersport. TIA

The time when i was with Axxess 4mb, P2P were shaped pretty badly during the day and mediocre at night. You said you do little to no p2p so that is not a problem.

Streaming was flawlessly 24/7. Games were fine any time of day as well.

I haven't used Kodi personally, but Showmax and Youtube worked fine, could also stream twitch on High. So other than the shaping my time with Axxess was flawless.

I am with Afrihost now they also have no problems my line is working like it should and i since i download at night i don't feel the shaping

I dont mind shaping p2p they should just leave the streaming alone as the internet is purely being used for watching tv I don't even have a bunny aerial and had enough of dstv ripping me off.

Streaming works flawlessly on both, the only reason i left Axxess was, because Afrihost has a lot of reps on mybroadband so if i have a problem i know it can be sorted out quickly with Axxess i had to wait a few days for my shaping issues at night to disappear.

Honestly you can't go wrong with either, but Axxess is 100 rand cheaper i think so i would say give them a shot

To get your landline number plug in a phone and dial 101999.
