No, not just you. I think more and more people are saying: "if the taxis can do it so can I".

My previous car had a tow bar too, but was hit from behind by a Touareg with a bull bar... The tow bar had no damage but my car was a write off.In a way you're correct, but what I'm talking about is low to medium impacts.
Bumpers are soft plastic, and at speeds below 40km/h the bumper will have a nice towbar-sized lump in it, but your car won't have any damage.
At higher speeds you may get a bit of damage (broken bumper etc) but still better than what you would get without a tow bar.
But yeah, YMMV with towbars though.

In winter on a cold morning the steam show is spectacular.Tow bars have this uncanny habit of when getting rear ended, to drain the radiator of the vehicle doing the rear ending.
I was on the Gaubus and it just barrelled through intersections as if it were a taxiMe, trying to get home in one (sane) piece in Jhb 17h00 traffic with load-shedding. I apologise profusely to anyone I may have upset with my impatience.
You might find it at a scrap yard somewhere...I need that tow bar![]()

btw, we drove the Mazda home and then to an assessment centre despite it being a write off due to the floor being bent (it doesn't have a chassis as such). The Touareg didn't look like it sustained much damage, but it had to be removed as the radiator was leaking.
This is what a written off Mazda 5 looks like (note tow bar is not bent at all):
