Hi all,

So I got my BB Bold 9700 yesterday, activated VC BIS, and all seems to be working quite ok. However, the BIS server is pretty much limited to lightweight comms type apps and what not.

I get alot of large mail files, and browse using my phone(s) quite a bit. Obviously I cannot use BIS for all of it, and the unit tells me I need Wi-Fi. Well, when I am travelling, Wi-Fi isn't available.

Now the question: Is it possible to still use the normal VC internet APN, running normal data alongside VC BIS? So when something cannot be done using BIS, it will use normal data? I am thinking about the setting for APN in Advanced Settings -> TCP/IP.

Thanks in advance

The standard mail apps will only work with the BIS service, so you won't be able to bypass the limitation on downloading attachments. Still - what do you want to view, that's so large, on your phone? Usually it does not mind if you forward a mail to somebody else with a huge attachment, and if you want to view a 5 MB spreadsheet, the chances are good that the phone isn't going to cope with it in anycase. In that case, you're better of plugging the thing into your notebook and downloading it to there - which will use the standard APN in any case.

There's ways of getting past the download limit in the browser - I regularly download podcasts on my Bold 9000 that's upward of 50MB.

You simply need to upgrade to OS6, as far as i remember the 9700 was shipped with 5 but supports 6. 6 uses BIS3.0 and as far as i know Vodacom is compliant with it. With OS6 and BIS3.0 there are no download limitations for anything. Its been tested in excess of 100mb, your only limitation now will be that of your mail server.

OS6 for the 9700 is out, but not officially but it does work, you can check the forums here there is a topic about it.
