My total obliviousness. Really, recently2 acquaintances (one male, one female) also said:

Anyway, they said they will help me next time I'm out where they are, by discretely pointing said girls out.

Yep, like I said, friend network is a bit help. I honestly don't think you can change this without some experience, and learning the cue's to look out for. Ask the friends what cue's you missed, or if you do date them and get comfortable ask the gf directly what hints she dropped that you where oblivious too. As with most things one learns from experience.
