Best Decent Android TV Box

I will have a look, not sure TBH, the AMP is in the server room but will check
It seems like the service is picking up the Atmos and likely something on the amp isn’t set right. I mean, I can override that Atmos if I want.

Maybe you’ve done similar mistake. Maybe those sound mode buttons at the bottom?

Press movie … then Atmos should pop up?

I’ve got a Mediabox Maverick and a Xiaomi Mi Box, and you can’t tell the difference. They’re both just vanilla Google TV boxes, as 99% of the others are. Maybe I’d notice a difference on some high-end screen, but they’re both plugged into 40 inch FHD TVs and they just work and have done so for years. Don’t overthink it.

LOL the OP(who does not have or want Apple) stated that he want something faster and more responsive than the 2gb players.
The rest of us that are truthful all have Android boxes with 2gb and know how they can be slow, can hang a bit sometimes etc, if you do something else than just click on Netflix and play your show.
I have 2 Ematics. Both work fine. But try and search and scroll too fast. Or click on more like this in Disney+, then it runs out of talent
Don’t bother. All he does is stream Netflix legally.

Out of curiosity, has anyone got a working Dolby Atmos setup ?

If so, do you have an amp and speakers positioned overhead etc, or are you using a soundbar.

I've been told that using a soundbar for DA is gimmicky and does not deliver the intended experience!!

@SauRoNZA (he may have blocked me, so I’m not sure if the tag will summon him)

Got the JBL 9.1 pretty good, though it still needs to do the ceiling bounce off to get the height.
The "virtual" surround when the speakers are docked is pretty good as well, that often nowadays I just leave them docked.

I have had 3 Android streaming boxes so far - in 2021 I had an Ematic AGT-419, then in 2023 I got a Xiaomi MiBox 2 (2nd Gen) - only had it for a few months, as it did not have a LAN port and it was impossible to get flash-drives to work properly in its USB port - then in September 2023 I got a Netogy Nova 10 unit - as it has 16GB storage, a LAN port & a SD card slot, as well as USB ports that actually worked - still very happy with it.

It is connected to a SONY BDV-E280 3D Blu-Ray 5.1 Home Theatre System & a JVC 32" HD TV set (with HDMI-CEC enabled, so it's one button power-up or shut-down).

Currently saving up to get a 4K UHD TV set later this year - around 55" or 65" - will probably go for a TCL or Toshiba unit - any recommendations?

Does it play ATMOS enabled media?
Why dont the Mibox units have Lan ports?

According to the official specs, it only has Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

Features:

  • Google and Netflix certified
  • Android™ TV 11 (or newer)
  • Chromecast built-in
  • Resolution: *4K Ultra HD @ 60fps
  • Supports High Dynamic Range (HDR)
  • CPU: Amlogic S905Y4 ARM Quad-core 64-bit Cortex-A35
  • Supports AV1 codec
  • 16GB Storage
  • 2GB RAM
  • Wi-Fi 5 (2.4GHz/5GHz) (2 x 2 MIMO)
  • Ethernet LAN port (10/100Mbps)
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • 2 x USB2.0 ports
  • 1 x Micro SD card slot
  • HDMI 2.1 with HDCP
  • Bluetooth remote with voice search
  • Dolby Digital Audio

The Xiaomi MiBox 2 (2nd Gen) only has Wi-Fi connectivity - having no LAN port is probably why it is one of the more affordable units on the market.

From the STUFF review in 2023...

The next issue, however, is a bit more difficult to forgive. Our biggest gripe with Xiaomi’s first box was the lack of a LAN port. Surely, we thought, it would present itself in some glorious fashion for the box’s second attempt. That, uh… didn’t work out.

Xiaomi has opted to forego the LAN port (again), instead focusing on reducing that weight. By 5g. We’re hopeful that by the time the 3rd-gen rolls ‘round, Xioami will have learned its lesson.

Otherwise, it’s got pretty much everything you need. Flip it around, and you’ll see a bleak lineup involving a standard 3.5mm aux hole, an HDMI port (of the 2.1 variety), the power port, and a USB-A 2.0 that we can only assume is for some sort of hardware manipulation that’s beyond our realm of understanding.

I have a Huawei B525 LTE router on my TV stand that has LAN cables connected directly to my Nova, the JVC TV & the SONY Home Theatre System.
