I've tried flat (Braun) and round (Philishave) and prefer the normal razor to the electric ones. The razor gives a much closer shave for me.

I have the Phillips Coolshave and it's brilliant. This one:

It's waterproof so you can use it in the shower and you insert one of these cartridges:

which work wonders...

Seconded. Brilliant shaver - it gives me a closer shave than a razor. I use shaving gel as a lubricant; it works better than the lotion in the cartridges, in my opinion. I recharge it every 2-3 weeks.

LOL I'm amazed at this thread. Last week I picked up the Clicks clubcard mag and noticed the Philips razors. Was also sick of shaving every few days and I have sensitive skin so I can't shave with a razor every day. So tomorrow it will be 1 week since using the Philips Speed-XL http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/za/consumer/cc/_onlineStoreStatus_false/_productid_HQ8150_16_ZA_CONSUMER/_retailStoreStatus_false/Electric-shaver+HQ8150. It's very weird at first but I suppose I will get used to it. I shave every day and sometimes it leaves some "stubborn" hair... but like I said, will prob get better with time.

What do you mean by a straight/flat one? Like one of these:

Any specific reasons why?

I have one of these Remingtons, but the 2 blade one.
My 3rd electric razor and works the best so far.

when u start using the razor, it's gonna take a while before your beard gets used to it.
Usually 2 weeks or so.

The rotary head that is used on the Philips shavers has a number of slots arranged around the outer rim whereas most of the other brands use a mesh containing a number of small holes. From my experience the rotary system works much better on longer stubble particularly if you haven't shaved for a number of days as the hairs tend to lie flat against the skin and won't easily slide into the small holes in the mesh on most of the other brands. A rotary system should also be much more efficient and reliable from a mechanical point of view as the heads just rotate whereas many of the other designs need to implement some kind of back and forth horizontal motion. Philips stocks a range of spares such as rechargeable batteries, rotary heads etc. for any components which might need to be replaced. I doubt that you'll be able to find spares for most of the other brands particularly after 10 years or longer.

Just broke out my old Phillips the other day - I prefer the blade and brush method but there is something to be said about the convenience of electric. It wreaks havoc on my neck though

Cool. I have sensitive skin so I'm a bit doubtful about getting one.

Lol, its called stokenphobia: fear of circles.

I don't fear circles. I just fear the round thingies on those razors
I don't know how anyone can shave with that. The flat thing makes sense to me but the other scares the crap outta me

6 months back I switched from Mach 3 Power to the Phillips Coolskin, never looked back since. Works best in the shower, and the charge lasts me about 2 months, shaving 3x a week.

Anybody know what other gel you can use with it besides the sachets you insert? Those are a bit pricey and only lasts about 3 shaves.

In the interim, I'm gonna ditch my Gilette Mach 3 Turbo razor. The blades are bladdy expensive. It usually costs around R88 for 4, this month is costed around R115. I had a look at the Schick Quattro blades and you get 8 for R80 odd. I can't afford to spend so much on blades. They hardly last anway.

+1.
And the round blades don't hurt at all :D I have had both versions and they both work well.
