Like many, I have had enough of DSTV. I want to get a STB/ Media Streamer/ MiniPC / Game Console or whatever that will do the following. (I am aware of the restrictions of our current poor internet services.)
I am not interested in any of the "linked content" devices like Roku or others like are built into "smart" TV's I want to be able to fully browse the net looking for content.
This "box" should be able to do much as your laptop would without actually using your personal laptop
* connect via LAN or wireless to a home network (windows)
* have capacity to browse, stream or download from the net
* be DLNA compatible and be future proof in the sense of being able to handle 3D, 4K and any codec thrown at it. (cannot be arsed to start converting files) does not have to be audiophile audio quality but enough to handle surround sound movie tracks, Dolby etc.
* have at least 1TB internal HDD or capacity for one
* be remotely wirelessly controllable via a keyboard on windows or via an android device like a phone.
* be able to take downloads from other devices (eg via USB) and organise folders on it using the TV as a monitor.
* connections LAN, HDMI, USB
I have looked at WD, Mede8er etc, but unsure if they will do the above.
Any comments from someone who has the T-shirt gratefully received. Please bear in mind I am not technical.
Also any other info re which are better media players than windows offers, or which apps will make life easier, most welcome.
Maybe someone can save me from watching the 55th repeats of 30 year-old shows like "Weakest Link" etc?
Ta in advance.
