Hi all,

I'm one of those poor sods who's been stuck with a 384 line for the past 4 or so years, since this latest telkom speed increase I've been chewing through my still relatively low 10GB cap happily. I'm just getting so sick of this right now, I need a change to uncapped.

Now I need an uncapped service that offers the all round best package, I can maybe stretch the 2mbps bundle by afrihost at R297 but that's even pushing it, I need a cheap uncapped BUT I still need to be able to download torrents, as I noticed on MWEB accounts it's almost impossible to download torrents which would make the internet connection somewhat useless for me.

Please can someone push me in the right direction? I've heard that the best all round package is with Afrihost, but I'm willing to take suggestions and advice. I already have a capped 10GB 1MBPS package with Telkom.

Hi korn101

I can arrange a 7 day trial account for you if you like.

AH is crappy right now, as you might know. But once they're out of the ruts it'll be the best ISP yet again. That will hopefully be in the next few days.

Can you elaborate? Why exactly is AH crappy right now?

I just signed up for AfriHost 2mps uncapped today, and I'm already on it :) seems good so far, thanks for the help everyone. It seemed like the way to go, and I was convinced after phoning their support line earlier today and getting through to possibly the most helpful support guy ever.

Ask this question and you will get 1000 different answers

Afrihost seems very popular and they have a bundle which includes the line. I like this idea
Open Web have a limited special offer in uncapped, at least 33% discount.
Many people swear by Mweb.

You will have to do your homework

Well my Axxess uncapped since the 2nd of this month has not been running over 384kbps, on a 1mb line. It worked fine for the 1st day then just when downhill. They first said it was my router that was faulty, even though a few capped unshaped accounts i have were running awesomely.. Now they have said that its a problem with IS and are moving over to the new mtn network on the 17th for that realm..I'm So over all of this, I'm thinking of looking for an alternative Uncapped ISP, any suggestions i thought Afrihost but thats basically the same. Any suggestions for cybersmart or mweb? Do either of them have NNTP servers?
Thanks

So you want another ISP because your 384 package is running at 384?

If you have a CAPPED package then yes fine. My capped 2mb runs at 2 mb on my 2mb line. My uncapped 1 mb runs at 1 mb on the same 2 mb line. Now if or at least when I go over 50mb download my line speed drops tp 384kpbs uncapped and stays at 2 mb capped. See it depends what package you have NOT line.

Stay clear of Cybersmart. I can't stress that enough. Their Uncapped service has been nothing but pain. I'll be moving once I serve the obligatory calendar month's notice in November. I'm probably gonna go with Afrihost, but I will trial the MWEB service before finalizing my decision.

MWeb - Try the R199 uncapped. They also have the uncapped/unshaped options as well.
I've used em for over two years now on 384 - the 1Mb is not bad - i saw peak of 111KB/s today - yay. Still need to chat to them to ensure my package reflects a 1Mb account.

Ive just upgraded to Mweb 2mb, I think I might be wasting my money, so far I havent gotten faster then 125kB down... Youtube works nice and slick and im yet to test NaviX, tonight's job I suppose :D

It seems that few of the ISP sites indicate how shaping is applied to their uncapped accounts. I'm considering moving from a 6Gb capped account to an uncapped one, from either MWeb, Afrihost, WA or heck even SAINET. The pricing seems to be approximately R199, with Openweb having crazily low specials. Since pricing and shaping (for online gaming and downloading) are probably the main factors affecting the decision, how do people find the various products on offer?

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT go with Cybersmart. Their support SUCKS and the uncapped packages are worthless. If you want dialup speeds then go for them.

I do understand that, I worked for an ISP. I also didnt say its a 384 account im using. My uncapped account had a service upgrade from 384 to 1mb, the day the line was upgraded. but sorry should have maybe stated the uncapped account is also a 1mb account

Also, another question - is the 2mbps worth it ? or will I still be experiencing mostly still 1mbps speeds?
If so I'll just downgrade my AfriHost to 1mbps for next month.
