Hi,

Im investigating hosts at the moment for a small online shop. Was keen to know if anyone has any local preferences? I'm obviously looking for stability and security as key features, with good support to boot. Saw the MWEB Business offering which seems quite appealing.

THanks,
Mark

im not really particular about the languages and databases on offer.

Im more interested in who offers the most options and packages, has strong security, network management, uptime and so on.

ie. i dont want to host on a website in someones cupboard with a single cable to the outside world.

How stable is Joomla compared to any other language asp.net or php ?
As well as this is for a online shop security issues ?

Yup Joomla has its fair amount of atttacks - VM is a great option wrt payment gateways etc - this liability rests with the gate way - use VCS and very happy with them...

Quick Question while posting something on Joomla

Joomla isn't a programming language like PHP or ASP. Joomla is a Content Management System that runs on top of PHP. Both PHP & ASP are very powerful scripting languages and can be used to write insecure and unstable scripts. Joomla is probably the most popular CMS and can be secured very well. You use can something like OSCommerce, ZenCart, VirtueMart, OpenCart, etc with Joomla and many large E-commerce sites use this combination as well.

For a payment gateway, use something like NetCash, PayGate, MyGate, MonstePay, Payweb, etc - they all integrate with the shopping carts mentioned above.

I would recommend Magento Commerce as the platform/software and Hetzner as the hosting provider.

My 2 cents..

Can someone suggest a local host with good prices with local servers. Most of the links given are international servers.

Go Joomla and Virtuemart

www.awd.za.net

./joomscan.pl -u www.awd.za.net

hehe

Code:
Target: http://www.awd.za.net

Server: Apache/2.2.17 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.17 OpenSSL/0.9.7a mod_bwlimited/1.4
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.14

## Checking if the target has deployed an Anti-Scanner measure

[!] Scanning Passed ..... OK

## Detecting Joomla! based Firewall ...

[!] A Joomla! GuardXT Security Component is detected.
[!] It is likely that webmaster routinely checks for insecurities.

[!] .htaccess shipped with Joomla! is being deployed for SEO purpose
[!] It contains some defensive mod_rewrite rules
[!] Payloads that contain strings (mosConfig,base64_encode,<script>
GLOBALS,_REQUEST) wil be responsed with 403.

## Fingerprinting in progress ...

~Generic version family ....... [1.5.x]

~1.5.x en-GB.ini revealed [1.5.12 - 1.5.14]

* Deduced version range is : [1.5.12 - 1.5.14]

At least you look after your security :D

Hi

speaking from experience I would not use mweb as they only offer ftp login, you can't create free mysql databases you need to pay for it extra cheapest I think was R150 for a 50mb one, no cpanel or virtueozzo or whatever, and every email address you create [email protected] you need to pay R20 for p/m ! thats poor service and a ripof. I'm with a company called paradigmsolutions they offer an unlimited unix (i assume you would be using a unix platform) for R99 p/m.
Their support is very good and what I like about their website is they have a live chat feature wich allows you to chat to a sales rep, support tech live
Their cpanel is easy to use and you get unlimited bandwith and unlimited storage, unlimited email, unlimited mysql databasis also they have free fantastico scripts you can install (very easy to do)
If you are going to use a ecommerce script you would probably need gdlibrary installed
when I was with mweb they did not provide this feature (I don't know If they do now)
goto:www.paradigmsolutions.co.za
if you want to check it out.
Also another uselful site is afrihost.com but they dont have unlimited shared hosting plans.
if you want a .com site use hostgater
If you need any advice you can pm me
