hi guys what is the best possible laptop i can get for R10k? i was looking at the ASUS N53SM-SX121V but i want the best value for money. I'm a varsity student so i need it for assignments and internet access mainly but will also like to play games on it(got broken into recently and they took my gaming pc :( ) i will post another thread asking about pc's(haven't decided whether i want pc or laptop yet. im looking at a laptop coz i don't want the temptation of a new pc in terms of gaming) so plz keep your responses in regard to laptops.

thanks guys

Well, for a student there are some nice choices out there and personally I think portability should be your main concern:

Gigabyte U2440N 14" @ R9635
Sony VAIO SVE14 14" @ R10,180 (favourite option at the moment)
Gigabyte Q1742N 17.3" @ R10,239 (same as NomNom's suggestion, different retailer)

Personally I'd be going with the VAIO SVE at the moment, everything's just superior from the build quality to the hardware and the screen.

Lenovo y580, go for just over 10k. Has a gtx 660m which is a decent card.

couldn't find it. for what i need i'd prefer a stronger GPU as opposed to a stronger CPU

The Y580 gives you both! :P

There was a thread a while back. Check my recent posts, I've posted in a few places about the Y580

I`ve ordered the y580 and that thing is a beast.
I7 Quad,8GB ram(upgradeable to 16gb),1TB hdd 660M,1920x1080 res for around 9-9.5k

the only drawback may be 1366x768 but there is a 1920x1080 if you can source it.(got mine from UK)
other models may be the mecer W370ET(17") or W350ETQ (15")

one with a bit worse specs would be a gigabyte Q1742N or Q1542N (i7qms and 640M opposed to 660M)

Bought mine off laptop direct. I see they don't list it anymore, but maybe just email them. I've also seen them on BidorBuy, not sure if they are grey imports or not. Otherwise use pricecheck or somesuch.

Like I said I got mine from UK,not really sure where...my siblings bought it(I`l ask when I speak to then)

oh ok i missed that part. pitty though, that laptop is beast for the price. whats the read/write like on the 1tb? and gpu in terms of new games?

But I`l post back/PM you when I do get my hands on it.
660M should be pretty decent though,
1tb I`m expecting it to be a bit of a slouch(its 5400rpm)

But there`s another member in pta who has one with a 1tb I think,I`l pm you his name
