Heres a list of RPG's I think are epic and deserve mention, I know quite a few of them are by Bioware but they specialise in RPG so ya. Theyre listed from best downwards:

Mass Effect 1 (epic story and you can have sex with blue alien chick)
Neverwinter Nights 1 (first proper RPG i ever played, was epic in scope and story)
Mass Effect 2 (epic story, epic characters and combat was brilliant)
Dragon Age Origins (the most by the book rpg ever, good gameplay and story)
Knights of The Old Republic 1 (loved the story and characters, especially HK47)
Fable 1 (awesome controls and quite a good story)
Fallout 3 (best open world rpg ever, and the add ons add a lot of scope to it)
Fable 2 (good successor, story was awesome and loved the way your character grew horns)
Borderlands (good open world rpg, love the variety of weapons)
Oblivion (first real open world rpg, story quite nice and different directions you could take character)

You might've noticed I didnt put in Knights of The old Republic 2 or Neverwinter Nights 2. Thats because they were kinda ruined by Obsidion making the stories too dark with no humour and messing up the engine with Neverwinter Nights 2

Any other ideas for noteworthy RPG's? I excluded JRPG's and console titles because im more of a pc gamer but additions from them welcome. Like Brutal Legend, loved that game :)

My top 10 list.

1.Baldur's Gate Series
2.PlaneScape Torment
3.Dragon Age Origins
4.Witcher
5.Mass Effect 2
6.KOTOR 1
7.Fallout 2
8.Vampire MasQuerade Bloodlines
9.Arcanium
10.Gothic 2

I never played Baldurs Gate or Diablo series lol, bit before my time. Planescape torment? Whats it about? And Arcanum rocked but Gothic 2 and 3 had major engine issues didnt they? I had a good system when they came out but ran at like 20fps

Never had any issues with gothic 2, gothic 3 yes but gothic 2 was fine. Also poor engine performance does not influence whether an rpg is a good rpg or not.

Planescape torment was released in the same time frame as bg 1 and fallout 1 by black isle. Its about an immortal who has lost his memories and has one of if not the best stories/dialogues ever written for a game. Not a game for people who don't like reading though.

Lol, ive played through Neverwinter Nights one multiple times, im use to reading :) Good point about the engine performance, but isnt a game more enjoyable if you can play it without crashing or slow speeds? Im gonna get planescape torment, Black Isle makes good games

Having just played through ME2 for the 3rd time, it's the best RPG that I've ever played. It's about as close as you can get to playing an epic movie where you're control the plot. The fact that the choices that you make in the first game can affect what happens in the third game is awesome.

I'm a big fan of action RPGs though. Turn-based combat isn't my style.

Lol, ME2 was epic. That first scene in the normandy was so brillaint, I actually restarted my game to see it again:)

Diablo 2 is by far the best rpg i`ve ever played.
It looks like an action rpg grind at the start, but the depth of skills combined with the items and runes makes it a perfect example of "easy to learn but difficult to master"

my top 10

Diablo 2
the witcher
Dragon age
Quest for glory
Diablo 1
Mass Effect
Baldur`s gate
Neverwinter nights
Titan quest
Borderlands

The suicide mission (the last one) did it for me. The cinematics, the fights, the musical score, the tactical aspects - it all came together perfectly.

What about the games that combine RPG and Shooter? i think they should count, i know its a bit of a cloudy segment with most games having RPG elements these days lol. How do you define a RPG? The fact that youre character gets stronger, a engrossing story, usable items with inventory or a proper thought out skill tree? Like overlord series, undoubtably a platform strategy rpg thing but it has a good story, skills, upgradeable armour and weapons. Whichever it is i know any game that Bioware makes ill buy the day it comes out, theyre the kings of RPG

At first I refused to recognise the original mass effect as an rpg beecause it looked more like 3rd person shooter. Now I recognise it as such because of the choices you are given, be it weapons or moral choices. Literally RPG means Role playing... which include every game ever made. So I guess at the end of the day it comes down to the nerd factor.

Lol, you mean how engrossed you get by the game? well i can tell the story of neverwinter nights 1 and mass effect 1 and 2, with all the possible outcomes, whereas with overlord i barely remember the stories

ya it was good, but fighting that last boss was hectic, first time i played on easy with a soldier, now im playing as a infiltrator on hard, quite fun. and the extra mission, normandy crash site was so brilliant

Baldurs Gate 1 (not the expansions)
Diablo 2 (Game with best replay-ability)
Deus Ex (fps rpg, need I say more?)

1. Mass effect 2 - the game was awesome and entertaining from start to finish. the suicide mission had me in a state i've never experienced in any game ever before. i feel that part 2 is just part of the build up of what will surely be the most epic mass effect which is part 3.

2. final fantasy 7 - not necessarily the best RPG or the 2nd best of all time in my books but it certainly is one of the most memorable. it was the first RPG to get me hooked. loved the story and emotions the game put the player through.

I don't quite have 10, but here goes:

  1. Mass Effect 1
  2. Mass Effect 2
  3. Oblivion
  4. Neverwinter Nights original
  5. Fallout 3
  6. Overlord

Mass Effect 1 totally ate up my time, I loved the way it just kept drawing me in and in. Man, I loved that game, still do. ME2 is darn close, but changes a few key things that sort of let down the experience a tiny bit. Still bloody awesome though.

Oblivion was so huge and epic, I still haven't finished it due to time constraints. Pity really, as I love the freedom of the game. Neverwinter Nights, another game that kept me up till all hours back in the day, loved the somewhat cheesy dialogue at times, and loved my character I created.

Never got too far in Fallout 3, but I really enjoyed what I did play. This is high on my list to play next. Lastly, Overlord. Not quite a true rpg, but a lot of fun, and the twisted humour really is funny. Liked it making a parody of almost all fantasy conventions.

I have KOTOR 1, haven't gotten a chance to play it yet past the first level, it crashed a lot on my Vista install. Maybe it will run better now in 7 with the last patch I could find.

While I've clocked Diablo 2, I didn't include it as I found it to be tedious. Loved the story, loved the music, loved the movies, but found the combat to be tedious, as well as inventory management. Simply got old after a while.
One thing that stands out is how prominent BioWare is on these lists. They really make games that chew up your life.

Lol, Out of all the game developers or publishers out there Bioware is the only I will pay for the game the day it comes out, refuse to crack or pirate their games. Was a bit worried when EA bought them but doesnt look like they were affected too badly. Its funny, Canada makes my favourite series (Stargate) and my favourite games.
