Chrono Trigger/Cross is legendary and as you said, an absolute classic.
Breath of Fire, Suikoden, Final Fantasy (X and X-2 were awful), Shadow Hearts, Disgaea, Tales of--, Persona and... so many more I can't quite put my finger on right now... were all amazing games each with their own special cult following

I've had my fair share of Final Fantasy, Persona, Phantasy Star and even all those old Sierra gamesBut what swings it for me with the newer games is that the storytelling is predominantly done via cut-scenes, and not having to read 1000s of lines of text (time is of the essence as you grow older
).
Also for the games that have combat sequences, I like having the ability of having direct input in the combat sequences. With turn-based combat, you kinda have to hit-and-hope as it requires little skill from the players themselves. It somehow makes me feel a bit detached from the action.
