Best RPG's ever made

Return to Krondor (not sure if it is more of an adventure game rather than an RPG)
The Elder Scrolls Series (especially Oblivion)
Dungeon Lords (great multiplayer capability)
Gothic 3 (though it was full of glitches)

Planescape
Dragon Age
Arcanum
Neverwinter Nights 1 (2 was, in my opinion, mediocre)
Mass Effect series
Baldur's Gate 2
Deus Ex 1 & 2
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Gothic series
Knights of the Old Republic series
The Witcher
Risen
Fallout 1 & 2
The Temple of Elemental Evil
Pool of Radiance

Not necessarily all in that order.

Edit: Almsot forgot Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader... Wasn't the most popular RPG, and it was highly criticised, but I loved it... Especially the demonic spirit (he was so silly :p)

I agree with you there. That sums me up as well.

hey everyone. anybody wana come to the forum i just set up for my site. its kinda empty and i wana get it going. its at forum.rampage-gaming.co.za. cheers

Having just played through ME2 for the 3rd time, it's the best RPG that I've ever played. It's about as close as you can get to playing an epic movie where you're control the plot. The fact that the choices that you make in the first game can affect what happens in the third game is awesome.

I'm a big fan of action RPGs though. Turn-based combat isn't my style.

Just one question: where the hell do you find the time to play ME2 three times already??? ;)

Lol, you mean how engrossed you get by the game? well i can tell the story of neverwinter nights 1 and mass effect 1 and 2, with all the possible outcomes, whereas with overlord i barely remember the stories

ur 13?

Nothing beats Diablo 2 Hardcore

There really is nothing in terms pure adrenaline pumping, heart dropping and intense gaming
than that of hardcore character playing

Some of my best memories and back in Naam stories were from playing hardcore. I just get chillz remember how duriel one shotted a lvl 76 paladin , or fighting the ancients and watching your health drop faster than a Bangkok ho.and killing Baal. Best times

So when i play these story driven RPGs they are really short lived and are nothing short of a dial tone:erm:

Since everyone assumed "RPG" = single player games , i'll just assume otherwise.

OTher than the obvious ones like Baldur's Gate.

I'd say simply based on "time spent" and "having some sort of plot" , the following is up there in terms of "best RPGs" .

Lord of the Rings Online
World of Warcraft

And there are a few others like GuildWars Prophecies [the PvE story] and Age of Conan [first 20 levels] where i spent more time in than any other single player RPG, so debatable if it's the "best RPG" , but it's certainly not bad of you focus on the story-lines instead of min/maxing your character.

No Betrayal at Krondor? Then this thread = fail

Someone mentioned the sequel, Return to Krondor [which wasn't that great] , 4th post. But yes, Betrayal at Krondor was great, especially if you were reading Raymond Feist [The Magician etc] at the same time.

Oblivion (first real open world rpg, story quite nice and different directions you could take character)

For the record, that's completely incorrect. Elder Scrolls of Arena and Elder Scrolls of Arena: Daggerfall were vast and was released years before Oblivion and Morrowind as their predecessors, and I couldn't find any features in Oblivion that wasn't present in either of these two games.
I remember going through a bit of a killingspree in Daggerfall, murdering hundreds of guards and civilians and then being contacted by the assassin's guild to become one of their members. This is almost exactly the same in Oblivion, save that it was easier in Oblivion as you had to kill only one person.

As for Dragon Age being "the most by the book", again, I refer to its predecessors. Careful with blanket statements when you're referring to a genre with so much heritage. You're evidently quite young but that's no excuse for ignorance ;)

It's funny how most of these lists never include the old classics such as:

Final Fantasy series
Suikoden Series
Persona Series
Tales of ... Series
Grandia 1&2
Breath of Fire
Disgaea Series
Legend of Dragoon
Xenogears
Chrono Cross
Chrono Trigger

etc etc those were the real deal rpg's not that I don't enjoy the new FPS RPG range ;)

Chrono Trigger/Cross is legendary and as you said, an absolute classic.
Breath of Fire, Suikoden, Final Fantasy (X and X-2 were awful), Shadow Hearts, Disgaea, Tales of-- :p, Persona and... so many more I can't quite put my finger on right now... were all amazing games each with their own special cult following :D

I loved the Shadow Hearts series... :(

I tend to blank out when i see the words, "return, "to" and "krondor" next to each other, thats how bad it was compared to BaK

I've had my fair share of Final Fantasy, Persona, Phantasy Star and even all those old Sierra games :) But what swings it for me with the newer games is that the storytelling is predominantly done via cut-scenes, and not having to read 1000s of lines of text (time is of the essence as you grow older :D).

Also for the games that have combat sequences, I like having the ability of having direct input in the combat sequences. With turn-based combat, you kinda have to hit-and-hope as it requires little skill from the players themselves. It somehow makes me feel a bit detached from the action.
