Beware mobile data promotion fine print

That 8ta one is scary :(

Wonder how many people actually know about it?

This is an absolute joke:

The title of the article should have been "Beware mobile promotion fine print".

With this kind of extortion:

"...after the promotional contract expires, subscribers will revert to the standard Internet 5 pricing and the contract will run on a month to month basis. The standard price for 8ta’s 10GB data bundle is R1,200 per month – 1,000% higher than the promotional rate"...

8ta is fast become the leading extortionist amongst mobile service providers.

Their current prepaid promotion is very deceptive.

8ta double your recharge.jpg

While the advert you see says double your airtime for any recharges over R50, it only looks great until you have a look at the fine print.

Aside from the fact that you will not know that you are on the wrong tariff plan for the promo until you fail to receive your 100% free airtime (you have to be on or switch to "8ta MORE"), you also have to read the fine print because these T's & C's will bite you:

FREE airtime expires within 7 days from date of recharge.
FREE airtime cannot be used for standard or promotional bundles (data, SMS/MMS, BIS/BES) and premium rated services.
FREE airtime cannot be used for international calls, international-roaming and international SMSs or MMSs

Indeed beware!

f possible, get a data promotion bundle on prepaid.

That way you can avoid falling foul of the OOB shark after the 24-month period ends.

Drawback - bung up a wad of cash at the start - but surely this is better than having your leg, arm and testicle chowed off?

[MTN] but the company’s help-desk informed MyBroadband that the promotional price will continue on a month-to-month basis after the contract period expires.
NOT TRUE!
I had a promotional AnyTime 500 contract, the month it expired, the price reverted back to full cost.
The contract should have dropped in cost - as the handset subsidy was fully paid off,
instead, the contract continued month-to-month at full cost.
When I tried to port to Cell-C, MTN refused because "the customer was on a month-to-month contract".
I had to convert from MTN Contract to MTN pre-paid, then port.
On Cell-C, I'm saving R200+ per month.

8ta is continuing to run its popular 10GB for R199 mobile broadband promotion, and according to the company’s helpdesk, the price will remain R199 per month until a consumer cancels the contract.

However, when Telkom was asked for official comment, it said that after the promotional contract expires, subscribers will revert to the standard Internet 5 pricing and the contract will run on a month to month basis. The standard price for 8ta’s 10GB data bundle is R1,200 per month – 1,000% higher than the promotional rate.
10GB for 199, 1000% of that is R1990, so 1000% higher is R2189 (199+1990), so R1200 is not 1000% higher than the promotional rate of 199 per 10gb.

8ta is cheap. You just need to cancel when the 24 month period ends. Same as with any data or cellphone contract.

I love the 'Light.... for heavy internet users' :p

I think by 'advanced internet users' they must be referring to people who know how to turn Windows updates off and dodge virusses. For the rest of us, we have to update our OS and Antivirus, so we have to pay more for uncapped. :wtf:

The R69 package is for internet ninjas who use wget and wput and refuse to use 'noob' tools like browsers... Hence 'regular internet users' - they use the internet regularly.

Should the CPA not protect people against this?
The contract should just expire and can only be reinstated (with current price or new price and conditions) with consent from the subscriber.
Damn these sharks just never play fair.

So all We have to do is cancel a month in advance of expiry date? No extra fees or anything? I'm with 8ta..
