Fog lamps

163. (1) A motor vehicle may be equipped at the front and at the rear or at the front or rear with--

one fog lamp; or
two fog lamps, one on each side of the longitudinal centre-line of the motor vehicle.
(2) No person shall operate on a public road a motor vehicle which, in terms of subregulation (1) is equipped with a fog lamp or fog lamps, unless--

every fog lamp at the front is so adjusted and maintained that it shall only be capable of emitting a dipped-beam of light complying with the provisions of regulation 161(3) and (4); or
the fog lamp or lamps at the rear can only be brought into operation when any fog lamp at the front or any head lamp of such vehicle is brought into operation.
(3) No fog lamp contemplated in subregulation (1) shall be fitted--

at the front of a motor vehicle with the highest point of its illuminating surface above the highest point of the illuminating surface of a head lamp emitting a dipped-beam of light; or

(4) If--

a motor vehicle, other than a motor cycle and motor tricycle with one wheel in front, is in terms of subregulation (1)(a) equipped with one fog lamp at the front, a parking lamp or parking lamps complying with the provisions of regulation 164, shall be fitted to the motor vehicle concerned in such a manner that every parking lamp shall be brought into operation simultaneously with the fog lamp; or
a motor vehicle is in terms of subregulation (1)(b) equipped with two fog lamps at the front and any such lamp is so placed that the portion of its illuminating surface which is furthest from the longitudinal centre-line of the motor vehicle, is further than 400 millimetres from the outer edge of the front of such vehicle, a parking lamp or parking lamps complying with the provisions of regulation 164 shall be fitted to the motor vehicle and in such a manner that every parking lamp shall be brought into operation simultaneously with the fog lamps.
(5) No fog lamp shall be fitted to the side-car of a motor cycle at the front, unless the motor cycle concerned is equipped with a fog lamp complying with the provisions of this regulation or with a parking lamp complying with the provisions of regulation 164 and which can be brought into operation simultaneously with the fog lamp on the side-car: Provided that if a fog lamp is only fitted to the motor cycle at the front, the side-car shall be equipped with one parking lamp referred to in regulation 159(1)(c)(ii) and such parking lamp shall be capable of being brought into operation simultaneously with such fog lamp.

Now lets discuss this shall we

So pls can someone give me a reason why
No person shall operate on a public road, a motor vehicle while any fog lamp fitted to such vehicle is lit, except in conditions of poor visibility caused by snow, fog, mist, dust or smoke.

But I'm allowed to drive with my headlights on any time of the day ?

I can see this being ripped into spare parts when it goes to trial :D

oooooo wait I think I understand it now.

By Fog light they refer to the DOC lights fitted at the bottom of a bumper and not the ones fitted next to the head light or the ones build into the bumper Just under the head lights.

IF they mean DOC lights then I agree fully but not the Dim lights fitted to all cars as a standard.

Think I got confused here :o

i always have no front or rears number plates and my fogs are on always :)
no fines , no demerits :)
lucky me !

Not being a traffis, I don't issue fines. But I do have a high beam switch on my car. Two wrongs don't make a right but I like the pretty blue light on my dashboard more than I like your fog lights.

There is no reason why you should be driving with fog lights on other than in the adverse conditions for which they are intended. If you can't see, get your eyes tested.

i occasionaly turn my rear fog light on when i'm reversing out the driveway, thing is you forget its on when you drive off

Perhaps you should check if your reverse lights are working, the white light coming from them is ample for me to see out the back while reversing slowly at night.

Well i have a car that has one little reverse light, and the other side its a fog light. Together they are much brighter, the red light shows up much better on the brick walls i am trying to avoid

oh Ja, totally understand where you're coming from. It's a good excuse to find some front fog lamps and attach them to the back of the car, then you'll be good to go...:D

I also got caught once a while back, but no fine or anything.

The problem with the rear fog (especially BMW) is that we dont know when they are tapping the brakes. That really pisses me off, but front fogs look f'kin sweet when on...
i suggest Hoen xenon match fogs :p

odd fellow

You should be locked up and the keys thrown away.

yeah i agree, lets catch all people with no plates and throw them in an overfilled prison and release the rapists and murderers, makes lotsa sense ...

What a stupid remark. You're actually condoning this criminal's behaviour?!
