Big Windows 10 update launched today

If you are updating your Windows 10 installation with an ISO it installs quicker if it isn't connected to the internet. My installation took just over an hour and I kept all my files and settings. :)
 
The message is rather pointless with its fading background

All your files are exactly where you left them
we've got some new features to excited about.

Then boom. Nothing. Just the desktop.

I'll fire up the media creation tool before I go to sleep, hopefully it works better that normal updates.

I'm assuming if I select create installation media for another pc I can use that same iso to upgrade my pc or do i have to select the first upgrade this pc now option?

Well I just spent most of the day handling the upgrade to the new build. My start menu issues have gone away after months of battling with MS suggestions. MS edge is back and working and so is my printer drivers at last. Hope this now sticks.....

Yes, your computers must be running the same version though. :)
 
I left my laptop downloading for hours, but it took four hours to move 4% so canceled it. It's even effecting Office 365 as my wife's update is taking hours
 
From my side, the first download of the upgrade went fine. But, upon upgrading, I got an error that the upgrade failed. Somehow, the files were deleted and I lost about 4GB in data. I purchased a 20GB bundle and then the download started a second time.

The second time around, the download took about 2 hours and the upgrade began without any issues. I just let the upgrade start and I went off to bed. I cannot say whether the upgrade got stuck anywhere, but when I woke up the following morning, the upgrade was done and I was logged into my desktop.

No problems with missing software or files. Everything working perfect this far.

By the way, I have an older Acer laptop (which probably does not even support Windows 10).

If you select "for another PC", you will be presented with recommended options for download. These options are appropriate only for your computer. By turning off "recommended" checkbox you will be presented addidional options, by example you can have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions in the same image (around 6GB).

In the next step you will have a choice to create image on the USB stick or save it in ISO file. I recommend the later, as you can create USB stick later. When ISO file is created, it is done.

To answer your question, you can use this file on another PC, you don't have to upgrade this particular PC. When you visit the same website from XP, it will allow you to download ISO file directly (not by download tool). But Microsoft do not publish checksums anymore, it is why download tool is safer.

Decided to take the plunge and upgrade my desktop from 8.1.

Seems to be 100%, no troubles. Start8 still works, will probably leave that in place.

All apps seem to work. Happy :D
 
Woke up this morning to a broken start menu, no jumplists and missing taskbar icons. They were all there when the pc went to sleep last night. This morning: "Poof!" gone. Formatted my pc and installed windows 7. That was the last straw.

I did the upgrade yesterday. Started at 11:30, and it finally finished at about 20:00. An no it is not the download that took all the time, it is the installation process which took forever. I thought it would simpler task from the media USB I downloaded but it seems to have made no difference.

Is the ISO file saved onto the PC? How do you create the USB later?
