and if u can afford a 4Mbps line + an uncapped account getting an international news server access too bought is not too far fetched.. now i wonder how much planing went into it. did he maybe line up downloads for a few months and then when everything was set run it? cause i know i run out of things to get pretty fast.

If you can afford uncapped 4Mbps connection with an Easynews account,
surely you can afford a few porn or Hollywood DVDs. I've seen what the newsservers have to offer and it's not much.

If people like this are going to burn accounts in this way then IS will stop selling "uncapped" accounts. That is only going to hurt the people that need this sort of uncapped account for business or other legitimate reasons (not pron or warez). The money that he paid was nothing compared to what it cost IS to provide the bandwidth.

1. Regardless of which news server he was using, he got the data which he wanted, and yes you can do 40 connection, i no... This guy reminds me of myself.
2. The fact that IS was monitoring him and did nothing - sorry for them.
3. When you buy something from someone, its yours, and how you then use it is up to you. Nobody has the right to tell him what he can and can not do. This is a free country.
4. What does uncapped means - no limits of the transfer of a specified amount of data over a period of time. So if IS is saying no but you can only do so much on that account, then its not a uncapped account and for that reason you cant then call it uncapped. For which you can complain that they do false advertising of a product which doesnt deliver as they say.
I do around 300Gig a month on my so called "uncapped" account, so what, i pay for it, and ill bloody hell do what i want with it.

You still don't get the meaning of uncapped. When SA sells an 'uncapped' account it means <insert anything in here that is not uncapped>. When a place like Giganews sells an uncapped account it means exactly that - uncapped.
If I get myself an uncapped account and download pron 24/7 there is nothing wrong with it because I paid for it. I pay exactly the same as any business why should they have priority?
If IS cannot afford the bandwidth they should not supply a service that they call uncapped.

When I worked for an ISP there was an idea floating around at one stage just to get rid of your top 1% of downloaders as they use close to 50% of the resources. Add a clause to your T&Cs and say ciao to the customer, you can go elsewhere...to another ISP.

It's not quite the same thing. Bandwidth is oversold in order to make it affordable. So you aren't the only person buying it.
An I am sure that you are a good law abiding person and not downloading any pirated stuff with that 300GB. Think of an uncapped account like insurance. If everyone starts claiming for things (rightly or wrongly), the cost of that insurance will increase. It's the people who only use 10GB that make it possible for you to use 300GB. If too many people start using 300GB because they are entitled to do so, you can be sure that the price will increase dramatically.
And what do you think would happen if everyone started doing the same thing. Uncapped accounts work because not everyone is going crazy all of the time. Those accounts would cease to exist and everyone (businesses and lordnokon above) would be forced to pay for 20GB installments. It sounds like you would prefer that option. Unfortunately in South Africa, Telkom screws it up for everyone. In other countries, Telkom would be paying for the peering link with IS and not the other way around. The point is not what is right in a perfect world, it's what is the best we can get right now. Until Telkom is sorted out, we have to make do with what we can get and screwing the companies over who are giving us options is not the best way to make it right.
Because it's businesses who actually give most people jobs. Typically businesses are using the traffic for inter branch traffic, not raping a news server. Without this option, they would not be able to pay staff as much as they can with it. IMO, it would be better for IS to have two uncapped accounts, one for businesses (shaping, no news servers etc) and private users (do what you want). They could then give each group of users a pool of traffic and not have the pron twits seriously impacting businesses.
It sounds like that is what you would prefer. Take my word for it, it would not be in our interests for them to do that. It only takes 30 users like the 1TB bloke to take up 10% of the IS ADSL traffic and mess it up for 40000 other users. The problem with IS saying it's a 50GB account is that you give people a target which they will do their best to hit. SA are so bandwidth starved that they will do it.

Just looking at the IS ADSL stats. The top 0.025% of users are using up almost 1% of bandwidth so I can believe these figures although I doubt IS are impacted as badly as that. You would probably find that in the IS case, the top 1% of users are using at least 20% of the bandwidth.
That's currently what's happening with my ISP, a WISP which suddently decided no more uncapped packages with only 1 day notice.....

Thats the danger. More and more ISP's are going to start stopping this sort of access as the only alternative is to drop the options.
Because of Telkom, they have only two options:
1) Don't offer uncapped
2) Have T&C that stop excessive usage.

The last bit of that report is interesting. Most uncapped using less than 20gigs. I really think standard ADSL caps could be 30gigs, as suggested over the last coupla years on this forum. That would satisfy just about everyone. How much of an impact would that really have on services? Everyone's happy instead of being in a constant pissed-off state. It's not like we're asking for the Crown Jewels here.

Agreed. The internet didn't fall over when Axxess and co were offering the 30GB accounts. The worst part is that this sort bandwidth starving actually makes people go wild when they get a window.
