We currently looking at hiring a bike driver/ factory hand, but not sure how much one should be willing to pay.

Their duties will including(but not limited)to the following:

Do deliveries 2-3 times daily (Usually these trips don't last longer than 90 minutes)

Help out in the factory with the following tasks:

Sanding, operate bandsaw, packaging, keep factory neat and tidy.

Our previous driver spent at least half the day sitting around doing nothing, which we don't mind as long as the work is done.

What is minimum wage these days? R 1300? Maybe factor in their transport costs I would go for R 2500.

Seriously?

I would think a bit more than that.
At least three hours of driving a day + the factory work + the "not limited to" duties = R5000

Only "education" this person needs is a bike license or learners and you want to pay them R 5k?

Considering the guy is in cape town. the salaries are not that high there.... But also take note that there will be days as the OP has said will be sitting around half the day. so in a way it is free money

Wow you guys are more frugal than me, figured 5k would be the bare minimum, depending on age and qualifications.

I guess I'm a nice guy :)
Purply, how important will this guy be to the running of the company? If he is absent for 2 days, would it be a train smash or would you be able to cope?

I will personally be the backup for this person, so no train smash if they need to take off for whatever reason.

That being said, during our busy period it will however create chaos as I alone won't be able to cope with everything, so reliability will be a factor.

Then you will have to pay more tbh. I agree then with Stevi. More along the line of R 4000 - R 4.5k

Yeah if I knew I was only getting R2500 - R3000 a month, I might not have the motivation to work hard and well. Would be tempted to stay at home hungover than at work :p

It's disgusting (to say the least) that some of you think R2500 is a 'salary' - totally disgusting... slavery is better because it is not sugarcoated as remunerated 'work'

Sorry what?

Please tell me what the current minimum wage is if you please? How is this any different than minimum work for minimum pay?

To put it in perspective, I pay my maid R230 for a half day of work.

If someone took the effort to get his drivers licence and works 8 hours a day, I would think R5k at the absolute bare minimum.

How do you expect people to survive on R2.5k? Half of that would probably be used on transport to get to and from work.

I would tend to go for basic pay + a bonus for good performance. Incentivise the behaviour you want.

I think wherever possible employers should pay their employee's a comfortable living wage.

Start him on R3000, see how he works and up from there. If he does a good job then up it.

Well that's not his problem. The company should utilize those skills in a better way.

We took this approach with our previous driver, employed him for 4k, upped it to 5k after 3 months. Six months later we gave him a performance bonus of 3k as he only took off once in that time. One year later we increased his salary to 6k. Needless to say he decided to go AWOL 3 days later, no idea why as we unable to reach him.

I'd like to do things better this time around if possible as training people takes time and effort.
