Bike driver salary?

I would say start at R5K a month... anything less is disgusting. Life is very hard out there...
 
Don't forget to have IOL / WCA sorted for him, he is way more likely to be in an accident that your other employees.

That's 4.5 hours already, never mind the time to load/take/receive whatever needs to be fetched/delivered and to receive instructions like where to go as well as figuring out a route on how to get there and back (+- 30 minutes possibly each time) as well as when at the place finding the correct person to deliver to/receive from - We'll add an extra hour on there to be conservative so that's 5.5 hours daily.

Have you ridden a bike before? In all the correct kit you'll be sweating like a mofo in summer and freezing your nuts off in winter. Not exactly easy conditions to contend with coupled with just about every bloody taxi on the road trying to kill you at every turn.

Help out in the factory with the following tasks:

Other stuff to keep him busy while he isn't spending 5.5 - 6 hours a day doing deliveries to make up a full day. On top of that "sanding, operate bandsaw, packaging, keep factory neat and tidy" is tedious and boring bloody work, but especially using a bandsaw can be dangerous if you don't pay full attention all the time. Sounds like this guy is going to have quite a bit of work to do - I think he deserves more than the slave wage you would offer.

Maybe a lesson in here for you. If you repeat the same with a new guy, you likely to get someone very desperate but unreliable. However, if you put it out that you will increase the salary based on performance then more likely to get a guy who is willing to work for 6 k rather than a guy who is looking for a 4 k job. Big difference in my opinion.

So it looks like the job is worth about 6-7k for the right person with the right skills. And you should advertise it as such.
 
When you hire at the upper end of the paygrade you can be choosy. Hire someone with real potential for other things. The person should work a full day. When not riding the bike, get her/him to learn the ropes for another job, perhaps as an understudy. Appoint someone as mentor. Have the manager develop a development plan with and for the employee. This should include both private and company-funded courses. Investing in good people brings immense returns. And quite often people who start humbly have a willingness to work and grow, and they can go a long way.

This has been a very insightful discussion, thank you for all your input. My main goal now will be to try and find someone young enough to mold them to take over my position one day. Am hopeful that we will be able to find the right candidate that's willing to start at the bottom and work their way up to the very top.
 
All I can saw is I wish I'd worked for you guys. Some very generous people here. Took me 2 years of IT work just to break the R5k mark.

I meant for his salary, Pay him for the amount of kilometers he has driven. Compare his mileage with google maps to see if he didn't take any unnecessary detours.

Obviously the fuel and bike service will be paid for by the company.

That's a shame. Honestly anyone wanting to pay someone less than 5k a month for full time work nowadays is a slaver at best.

I'm guessing you are working for an agency? That was my position too. Front end developer earning R7500 a month. I couldn't even rent a place to stay without being broke every month. (After fuel, medical aid and insurance I was down to about R3k).

I moved to a corporate environment. They are a lot more generous with salary.
 
I'd say R4000 is fair, but you'd have to get a life policy to pay out for his family if there's an accident. Also add the stuff like non-absenteeism bonuses etc. Total CTC should be around R5000 excluding bonuses, and be sure to upskill him as others suggested.

No one like a lowballer, seriously.

Worked for various small companies. Also in corporate now 6 years later. Salaries are way better

I couldn't imagine trying to live on R5k a month either. My first job I earned R6000 after tax and only managed to do fie there because I lived with my parents. Now you know why many people live in townships, steal electricity, etc etc. There's a huge disparity between the haves and have nots and people thinking it's ok to pay menial amounts keeps exacerbating the problem.
