Excuse my ignorance but what was fresh about it other than it being SA? Just another alien movie. Maybe i missed the fresh somewhere .

The last half of the movie is pretty much a stock standard alien flick, but the documentary style beginning is pretty novel. I guess you must miss a lot of things in life

District 9 was okay. I think if it weren't for Peter Jackson being the producer it would not have received such attention.
Avatar was way better, and remember that Avatar came out much later than District 9. So actually Avatar must be number one.

Avatar was released on December 10th whereas District 9 was released on August 13th. Clearly Avatar must be the winner on the list, not to mention that there isn't even a DvdRip out yet for Avatar.

What the Canadian film. Neill Blomkamp (the Director) was born in South Africa but now lives in Canada (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neill_Blomkamp). Terri Tatchell (Co-writer) is also a Canadian (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terri_Tatchell).

They only used South African actors because it was cheaper and it fitted the plot. And they also filmed it here because it was cheaper.
