Black rape furore

Hang on a moment!

Fudzy, are you saying that the practice of raping infants to cure AIDS does not exist? As for using it as a defence in court...well I'd bet that the most common defence is "I di'n' do nuffin!" as opposed to admitting guilt. I can however imagine last desperate cries that it's the sangoma's fault coming as the accused is being dragged off to the clink. Let us view this as superstitious dogma rather than an issue under the broad umbrella of culture. But for crying out loud, let us agree that it does happen.

STS...my belief on helping these people (and others guilty of the same and similar crimes with whatever motive) is to help and protect society rather - by removing these people from it. They're too far gone to ever risk having them back. That's just my 2c.

AN HIV positive Plumtree man has admitted raping his daughter, 17, and infecting her with the virus so that he could be cure, apparently on the advice of his dead mother.

The man, 45, who is from Ngwanyama area under Chief Wasi in Mangwe district but cannot be named to protect the identity of the daughter, was sentenced to 20 years in jail by Bulawayo magistrate Judith Zuyu on Wednesday.

The court was left stunned when the man pleaded guilty to a charge of rape and pleaded for leniency saying: "Your Worship, I am sorry; please I beg for leniency since I committed the offence in compliance with what I was shown in a dream by my late mother. She was telling me that I should sleep with my daughter so that I could avoid death."

Prosecutor, Tinashe Dzipe, said the man started telling his daughter about his strange dreams in 2007.
The court heard that on one occasion, he invited the girl to his bedroom and told her that he had been instructed to sleep with her in order to be cured from his ailment.

Dzipe said from that day he went on to rape the girl several times until something in October 2007 when she fell ill and was diagnosed with the virus. The girl left her parents' homestead to live with her uncle to whom she narrated her ordeal.

However, the uncle did not take her seriously and left to go to South Africa without doing anything. The girl only reported the matter to the police recently leading to her father's arrest.

Why would a defense lawyer want to keep that under wraps?

So the person appointed to defend these idiots are going to advise them to claim I did it because it will cure my aids?

If not caught red handed who do you think will testify that the accused raped the baby? Our DNA labs? It takes more than 10 years if you are lucky enough that the evidence is not tarnished or misplaced for DNA results in SA.

I do believe it is a terrible misconception but not responsible for as many of the baby rape cases as some are implying.

So you're telling me out of all the cases, none of them have even brought this up in a statement? I find that hard to believe.

Why?

Of all the things you can say in a case with no witnesses? You are going to confess to a crime that was committed on the word of a sangoma, that has been proven to be a myth.

You think defense lawyers are that thick?

They must've muzzled that researcher in the news article I posted earlier too. I really underestimated the power of the public defender.

Kleijn spent three years interviewing 10 men in maximum-security prisons around South Africa, all of whom were serving long sentences for raping children younger than three.

She wanted to “understand the why”. She emphasised that understanding the behaviour was not excusing it. But, if you can understand “the why”, then maybe you can start to find a solution. “If you show empathy for a rapist, it is not the same as showing empathy for their act,” she said.

She found that the men were all “severely damaged human beings”, and it’s for this reason that they did what they did. They feel no empathy or remorse because they don’t know how.

“When I interviewed these men, when we did the final debriefing, they thanked me because they said it was the first time in their lives that someone actually listened to them without judgment, with empathy and with respect, and that says everything about what went so wrong – that no one listened,” Kleijn said.

It is also important to realise that rape is not about sex.

The victim just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kleijn said rape was about power, and that all the men she interviewed had experienced high levels of anger before committing the rapes.

I still don't understand what you are saying.
A group of 10 men were interviewed.

Were you trying to be sarcastic?

It didn't work.

You are defending what exactly? It wasn't the only example she mentioned, why are you defending this one so feverishly?

Wouldn't 10 be enough of a sample for AT LEAST one of them to come forward and say they did it because they thought it would cure AIDs?

I don't get how you deducted that a baby being raped to cure aids was not in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Angry because they found out they have aids.
It has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with curing aids.
None of them said it was not why they did it either.
( your link doesn't work btw, so I can only read what you posted)

Sorry I copied the whole lot from my post in the previous page. The Edit function seems to be a bit eff'd at the moment: http://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-courts/why-do-some-men-rape-babies-1.1567541#.UiTFQDZmyuA

You've got nothing to back up those claims though, where as this lady did the research. I would bet if that did come up the news papers would have been all over it. Instead it receives a disgusting lack of follow up on these stories. There are no recent news articles or studies to link the superstition to the rape crises we currently have. If you have found something, let me know.

Thanx.

You don't have much to back up your claims either. She never once mentioned that these men didn't do it to cure aids.
She do say that it is between the ears not between the legs, where else would the decision happen to rape someone to cure aids?

It has nothing to do with an itch that needed to be scratched.

I agree with the article. I read what is said, I also see that she never addresses the aids cure.

Mihloti added that she regretted not taking the man’s statements seriously last year, when he asked her if she knew that having sex with a virgin could cure HIV.

“I thought he was joking. I asked him where he would get a virgin nowadays. He said even a child could cure it,” she recalled.

Despite the man being HIV-positive, Mihloti said she laughed off and dismissed his utterances “as a sick joke”.

She did have a premonition that the man could one day rape their child – then 15 months old – but suppressed her feelings.

Her fears became real when, on February 3, she discovered their daughter had been raped.

Some surveys suggest that up to a third of South Africans believe in an ancient and bizarre "cure" for AIDS.
