BlackBerry speed tests

^ That looks pretty decent, is this on 3G or EDGE/GPRS, MTN or VC, which province?

Here's my latest test on vodacom at 3G in the western cape.

Oct 11 21:08:27

Here are the Speedtest results for my Blackberry:

Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 5.54Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 15.57Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 17.35Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 69.66Kbits/s

Compared with a friend on mtn using the same 8520
And man it was catastrophic!

Seems to be around ten times faster! Likelihood of anything being done to solve this?

I complained to Vodacom via their website and I got a call back after 3 or 4 days after some backwards and forwards with email. They said they are aware of the problem and they are trying to fix it. He then started saying that RIM have something to do with the connection so I reminded him that MTN dont have the problem. He was a bit lost for words but yeah.

At least they aren't denying it.

Hectic, that puts you in the same boat as rest of us in WC ie., Sub 20kbps

Wonder if there is any throttling going on here, I mean how do you go from hero to zero in one foul swoop

I really hope that VC is going to take on their responsibility to provide the services they are so intent on selling to us, because those numbers on 3G = FAIL.

Yes FAIL :(

MTN subscribers do not suffer from these anomolies

I think Vodacom is just taking the "lets ignore everyone and hope they go away" approach.

Which is why I, "Say NO to Blackberry 8520 on Vodacom Blackberry Internet Service"

Please VC, let me change the NO to YES, pretty please :o

Super slow BIS on Vodacom with Blackberry 8520

I got my Blackberry 8520 this weekend from Vodacom.

ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED at how S.L.O.W. it is compared to what I experienced on MTN.

Staff at Vodacom 155 call center known only 2 solutions to "fix the slow BIS problem".
1) Please dial *111# to re-register for BIS
2) Hard boot the phone by taking out the battery while the phone is on.

No use phoning them for help. I would recommend that if you are with Vodacom you DON'T get a Blackberry. I hate Vodacom I hate Vodacom I hate Vodacom BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) - I want to use the words Vodacom and SLOW and Blackberry Curve 8520 and Vodacom Contract and pathetic service from Vodacom and Vodacom is the slowest network on earth when it comes to browsing on BIS with Blackberry as often as I can on the internet because I want Google to scan these messages and whenever a new customer search for reviews on a Blackberry cellphone in South Africa, I hope these threads come up first, together with all the lovely complaints on HelloPeter before they actually get to the reviews.

People must know how pathetic it is to own a Blackberry with BIS and be tied into a contract with Vodacom with a call center that has no clue and a company that won't acknowledge that they're offering a non-working service and then have the cheek to launch a massive marketing campaign where they offer the phone for cheap to everyone, while they can't even service their existing customers.

I'm also posting as many positive messages on the net as I can for MTN and Blackberry with BIS. Because Blackberry phones are amazing on MTN with BIS - it's like a dream to use them on MTN!!!!!!! I love MTN I love MTN!

I'm going to pay for Google AdWords for 1 week so that my link will come up on top of Google searches in SA for Blackberry BIS on Vodacom and I'm going to tell the world, everyone that clicks on the link, about the poor service we getting and I'll recommend and link to wonderful specials for Blackberries on MTNdirect.co.za. I have a couple of Google Adword vouchers that I got in the newspaper so I'll get at least 1000 clicks out of them - so on a R149 contract Vodacom will hopefully loose out on R149000 per month and hopefully that money will all go to MTN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Screw you Vodacom!

I feel your pain, I understand what you are going through, how, because I am experiencing the exact same thing.

More importantly, we are not alone, as is evident in the activity on the forum of others like us bemoaning the choice of using the crippled BIS from VC.

I cannot and will not endorse Vodacom BIS because it is truly pathetic to rip your paying clients off in this way.

Read this post in the MTN section.

MTN BIS is flying today. At around 10am I downloaded a 21MB file at an average 61KB/s (488kbit/s). Very quick for mid morning.

Must be nice to have Blackberry that actually works.

Eish.....

I think we should all complain on HelloPeter as well

I've just typed a nice complaint on Hello Peter. Let's all complain and post speed tests on Hello Peter as well as on MyBroadband.

I see the PR people on Hello Peter is trying to be very politically correct. But, they always reply to each complain about slow BIS on Hello Peter with the following irritating line:

"In order for us to assist you, you need to provide us with your email address as we need more information for escalation".

When you write your complaint, please type in the complaint that it's not neccesary for them to get more info from you as you're merely stating that they're BIS service is VERY slow. I linked to this forum in my post so hopefully EVERYONE will see this. I also pointed out that there's a thread on MyBroadband where MTNers are raving about their lightning fast speeds.

Tell them you don't want to "enter into an email conversation to get more info to escalate" type scenario - we just want them to fix it - there's nothing to talk about, and much to do about.

I also fell for the Vodacom Blackberry 8520 Scam.
Been doing speed tests and it ranges between 1.02Kbits/s to 12.71Kbits/s for download speed and 4.07Kbits/s to 4.29Kbits/s for upload.
Does anyone know if I will be able to put my contract MTN sim card into my BB and just have MTN BIS activated? Is the Vodacom Issued Blackberry 8520 network locked?
