I've decided to just jump in and go for the storm on vodacom. Anyone know of we in RSA also get a 8GB memory card in the box?

Since I went to .131 and then .141, I cannot just view an attachment. Wants to save it every time.

Latest 'official' feedback from Vodafone is that .141 has received 'Conditional' Technical Acceptance (as opposed to no acceptance for previous versions), so it should be all go for it.

OK, then it's a done deal. I get a weekly update from Vodafone on the status of the BB firmware revs and the one last week still said conditional TA. But obviously they've moved on it. Which is good.

Also suspect it's something like this. I've also lost Documents to Go and can't get it pushed down again.

Mmm, Im on .141, (i did a wipe and clean install with J)
And it's the first time Im experiencing the Storm as "lovely"...
Documents to Go is fine by me, I selected it as part of the OS install... mmm?

I took the chance, I guess if I ever need support Ill have to roll back to .78 which comes with the phone/cd's

Although I doubt it, I think most of us on this forum are in a position to assist customer care, and not the other way around

Thats what I also thought but according to RIM they can still detect even if you roll back ? How true does that sound ? I highly doubt it. Anyway once again thanks for the great tips.

One thing:

If you get a mail with a .jpg attachment and you select 'Open Attachment', does it prompt you to save the file first?

Bear in mind that Vodacom's policy is to support only the firmware / software versions that is available from http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/blackberry/downloads_handheld.jsp viz it has to be approved by the Vodacom SA network for it to be supported.

Whilst this may not be upto date all the time with the latest revisions , it will not be supported from what I know.

This is not too say that one cannot run more uptodate software from another carrier linked from http://www.na.blackberry.com/ but to be aware of this policy.

8900's performance is very good for a GRPS / EDGE class device.
I have one and use it fine with no complaints on the speed , if I want kick-ass browsing then I use a bona-fide computer though.

How is the 8900’s internet performance without the 3G? How is the GPS performance? I like the look of the phone and I like the features as well as the price tag.

I’m looking for a phone that I can use to get my quick fix of surfing every now and again when I’m away from my computer. Check news24, emails, forums or submit superbru picks. If I want to start downloading big apps I can do it through my wi-fi at home.

So all and all, is the non 3g 8900 sufficient for day to day internet browsing?

On this note w.r.t conditional acceptance ...

1 of the clients has 100 Bolds that they want to do a firmware upgrade on , 65% of those Bolds are in the UK and run on Vodafone & the rest on Vodacom-SA.

Vodafone has the following version available - File name: 9000M_PBr4.6.0_rel451_PL4.0.0.223_A4.6.0.266_Vodafone_UK.exe
Vodacom has the following version available - File name: 9000M_PBr4.6.0_rel414_PL4.0.0.203_A4.6.0.244.exe

Those users on SA on Vodacom-SA have a vested interested to run on a firmware/software version supported by the local carrier for terms of warranty and for this warranty to be honored if the device breaks.

From what I know the Vodafone & Vodacom-SA networks are not 100% identical in terms of GSM and other enhancements offered on the networks.

By all means play with OS versions but be aware if you responsible for looking after your companies Blackberries on what the carriers policy is.

Differences in firmware offered by RIM direct to the carrier are minimal aside from branding (the Vodafone logo and theme , the MTN logo and theme , and certain elements required for the device to function RELIABLY - not being the fastest at a certain aspect - but RELIABILITY) is key to these staggered releases.

This is frustrating for the technically inclined like myself and yourself , I run a MTN supplied 8900 with the branding version unremovable by myself , I got it with .164 and am now on Orange-UK carrier with their approved version .206 firmware , subsequently I don't call Vodacom or MTN for support on this device (so play but be careful)

Have you installed .141 using the vodafone (UK) specific file on the blackberry website? I’ve downloaded that file and I’m ready to update my storm but I’m a bit hesitant as this is the first time I will be doing so. I’ve all the details on how to do the update which I found from crackberry.

But what happens to the phone after the update? Do I need to re-setup email, mms and all the default Vodacom settings? Or is it just a matter of updating, booting up and business as usual?

My Storm is in use & so far much better than I expected (especially for a 1st time BB user), even without any changes to osw. Am experiencing 1 problem though...screen seems to like the landscape mode as opposed to the standard portrait. More often than not it switches to landscape, (even whilst taking it out of the pouch) & needs a good few flips to get it back to portrait.

Ito desktop manager sw, which one should I be going with as the options from the BB website seem to be endless. Have not installed it of the cd, instead chose the check website for latest sw option & was then stumped.

BLACKBERRY 9630

hi guys.

its impossible 2 get a definite answer on this. but has a release date been confirmed for the 9630/tour/niagara/whatever? im currently thinking about getting a curve 8900, but if the 9630's on the way then maybe i'll wait a bit.... but i'm pretty impatient.

what do u lot think? wait for the 9630? or is the curve good enough.... ?
