Hi.
Looking at getting Storm or Bold.
Realised that Bold is more expensive than Storm, so I read some reviews and lots of people are hating Storm for their touchscreen.

Is there anyone who have used both phones who can give me some heads up on what to get?

Looks like I can get UK version Storm 2nd hand for about R4000.
Bold can't find one at similar price.

Like the Storm for it's look, but Bold has proper qwerty keyboard... Hmm..
Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

v3g raved about both handsets.
Drop him a PM.

I can't think of anyone else here that has had experience with both of them.
But also from what I've read about the Storm is that it's not too hot.

Hmm, thanks.
Can't seem to find any hot deal on Bold, that's the problem.
Plenty Storms No Bold.

There seems to be a shortage of Bold handsets of late - MTNSP still has a few laying around. Try the smaller outlets.
As for the deals on them - I think they should still be available on MTNAnytime packages - the best deal that was around for the last few months IIRC.
The Bold was on Anytime R350 I think, but now at R409 p/month with MTN.

Some posts of v3G that I came across that may give some insight into both handsets.

I don't know what deals VC have for the Bold - I find the site a nightmare to navigate :o

At least also consider the new 8900 Curve - a very nice phone!

No 3G :(
Indeed a great phone - but how RIM decided on not hooking the handset up with 3G is beyond me.
They really dropped the ball there.
Looks great though.

My take on the Storm is that is's a Me-Too product after the iPhone and HTC touchscreen phones. But sadly, lacking even the basics like WiFi. And the press-the-screen-down for EVERY keystroke gets old after awhile I heard...

But then again, the Bold is just a better version of the Curve - if you didn't like the Curve, you're sure as h*** not going to like the Bold...

I had both a Curve and a iPhone, and neither suited me 100%, that's why I went back to a Palm Treo...

With the compression that RIM uses I really dont see the lack 3G is a big deal. I'm not going to use it tethered or to watch video - neither of which are covered by the inclusive data plan anyway.

Alright will hve to do some more reading.
Also bb 9630 is on the way.

You won't be disappointed with the Bold unless you need a great camera. Everything else on the Bold is awesome! The ergonomics of the keyboard is brilliant and is probably the only decent qwerty phone you can touch type on at 50+ wpm. If you aren't gonna be doing much typing then you might as well get an iphone.

I agree the Bold is the best 'proper' Blackberry.

But I'm using the Storm at the moment because I get more glass so I see more when I browse, mail, etc. The Bold's screen is about 2280 square mm's while the Storm's is about 4125 (I just did a rough measurement). And the Storm is actually smaller than the Bold!

The tactile keyboard is, in my opinion, a better bet than a touch-only screen like the iPhone. But the Storm still is not as slick as the iPhone (no phone is, the iPhone still is the clear market leader in this).

What I do like about the Storm is that I can do anything in either landscape or portrait.

What I don't like about the Storm is the battery life and I sometimes get complaints about voice quality.

Most of the problems described on the Storm seems to be better or gone with the newer firmwares (not yet officially released in SA).

It's just such a pity that the Vodacom iPhone deal is still so expensive. Will it ever become more affordable? The additional handset pay-in (cash or financed) is very high.

Well, Im probably biased, but I love my Storm.
Its definitely sucky out of the box, and with the right OS loaded, the keyboard lag is gone, the battery life is better and the signal is good. Voice quality is great for me.
Im currently on ver .113, which has a bit better battery life than .122.

Be as it may, I think the iphone users shoudl drop their gaurds a bit, no one said it's a competition (same with 5800). The tactile screen is LOADS better than just touch, I type fast, and I dont make mistakes.

Elke brommer op sy eie drol.

.113 or .133 ?

.113
I always make the typo.
The keyboard lag is gone(or almost anyway), battery life is good, memory leakage is well controlled, the only complaint from me so far is the time it takes to lock the screen (4 seconds). The Storm will definitely be awesome with the upcoming firmware (5.0 being on the tables)...

Was wondering. I know .131 is floating around.

Geez, now I can't make up my mind..
vodacom3g planning to sell either one of your handset???
Why r u keeping both BBs?

A snippet from BGR about the to be released BB "Tour" ...

"We went through this with the Storm review and we told most of you to wait for the 9630. Most of you didn’t listen and you’re bitching everyday about your Storm. It’s ok, we’re here to help. Basically, to you know, not beat around the bush. Verizon + 9630 = the best BlackBerry experience on the planet. This is the phone you’ve been waiting for. Smash those Storms, donate them to charity, sell them on eBay or give them to your significant others you want to slowly and cruelly torture. This is it as far as Verizon goes. We said the Storm was the best phone on Verizon (hey, everything is relative, ok?) and this obviously takes it a step further. In its complete buggy state probably more than 3-4 months away from release, this is going to be the big seller on Verizon when it launches. There’s not a single person who wouldn’t want this phone. Young, old, black, white, rich, poor, disabled, not disab… never mind.

RIM and Verizon, congrats. This will seriously screw with AT&T’s BlackBerry customers and poach more than a few. Just remember Wi-Fi is a friend and there are people that need Wi-Fi rather than want it.

We can’t wait until the 9630 launches, it’s going to be a great all around phone."

I think I'm going to go for the Bold. However, this time I'm going to get a South African handset as my current Blackberry is locked to AT&T and I can only use it in the US.

I'll get a nice HTC or something on my AT&T contract, that should be easier to unlock being Windows and all.
