Blackberry versus iPhone in SA

blackberry= bad build quality, questionable OS, good email, all work little play

iphone=fashionable, great multimedia experience, not optimised for real bussiness uses

point being, that the majority of the people buying smart phones are looking for bussiness device, qwerty keyboards in the mind of millions is the only way to properly send an email. Iphone on the other hand really have nothing to fear, the apple brand has a loyal following and even if the next iphone is inferior to the current model it will still be bought by the loyal apple fans.

Well, then please share your assessment;)

I'd be happy to. In the five years I've been using the backberry I've found the phones to be reliable and the os rock solid.

There is no shortage of applications on either device but the iphone might have the advantage there.

While I also have, and use, both devices on a daily basis I favour the blackberry due to the data plan.

I use both for work and play and there is little to choose between them, to be honest. There are small differences but this is to be expected and mostly in the way the user interacts with the device.

I've been asking for a while now that we get clarity and agreement on what we mean when we use terms like 'business orientated' or 'multi-media'.

What 'business function' can't the iPhone perform, for example? What 'multi-media' function can the Bold or Storm not do?

So, in terms of functionality, I see little difference between the phones. But it's often the small details that swing your personal preference.

Right now I use the Storm more than the iPhone, primarily because it can forward SMS's, and can type in landscape. Both functions I really need. Version 3 of the iPhone OS sorts this, BTW.

Also, for the odd times I need a GPS, the Storm is fully functional.

But I miss the iPhone's super slick touch screen (but I prefer the Storm's 'click-screen') and battery life. And the Apple app-store is still leagues ahead.

I started using the Nokia 5800 recently, and while it's still early days, it is right at the bottom of my list at the moment. I suspect it also needs to first go through a couple of software iterations before it becomes usable. And the build quality is not nearly at iPhone or BB levels.

Yes, hugely important point.

While I cant really talk for the iPhone as Ive only tinkered briefly on someone else's I can however comment on the BB Bold. The build quality is certainly not bad. In fact I am extremely happy with it. It feels like it was made properly.

The OS is superfast and rocksolid. In fact a friend who has and adores the iPhone commented on the speed on the Bold.

Purely based on the number of Storm postings on the MyBroadband forums, I would guess that the number of Storms sold in South Africa is disappointing for RIM and Vodacom. This guesss is supported by the number of Storms I have seen in other persons' (colleagues, friends, family, clients) hands. In fact, I haven't seen one other besides mine. I've seen quite a few Iphones and Nokia 5800's.

Unfortunately for Blackberry, the Storm is/was not one of those phones that one could master in 5 minutes of playing around with it. This, together with the negative publicity after earlier launches overseas, put many people off.

However, the Storm is a great phone and the recent firmware upgrades sorted out many small faults. Its build quality is one of the best I've had over the past 15 years.

There's about 15 people who have switched from BB's to iPhones where I work.

I've had to demo my old 2G iPhone to about 30 people there so far.
People actually like the iPhone's email more than the BB's.

Why?

Seconded on both points. It really does come down to personal preferences. I like the physical keyboard. As a long time Palm PDA user, I'll be interested to see how the Palm Pre comes out, given that it combines elements of both design philosophies.
