Nokia only acquired Symbian Ltd in December 2008....
 
Nokia is still relevant in today's industry. However the days of them dominating anything are long gone.
 
BlackBerry still satisfying the needs of a lot of South Africans. Thought the Android number would be higher.

I'm not comparing anything..

I'm just pointing out that your knowledge of the Cellular world is so biased towards Nokia that you actually get the history wrong.

Androids only really taken off in the last year. Blackberry has been around for 7-8 years and the Iphone 3-4yrs. Next years numbers should be interesting.

Edit: Although I dont understand why they are comapring 2 manufacturers to an OS. Seems to skew the numbers in favour of Android.
 
I'm sure the Android and Apple numbers would shoot up if the SP's provided an agnostic "uncapped" mobile broadband product.

If they offered a 256kbps service (you don't really need any faster to download emails and browse Facebook on a phone) specifically for smartphones for R79, then they would most certainly see huge movement in the numbers of subscribers using the service.

Let's face it, people only do the Blackberry thing for it's "uncapped" internet.

I have a Nokia N8. What do I do with it?? Nothing, my 4 year old son plays Angry Birds on it almost everyday.
I have a Galaxy Tab P1000. What do I do with it?? I play games on it and also use it as a hotspot for my PS3.
I have a Blackberry Torch. What do I do with it?? I use it for business, e-mail, facebook, twitter, BBM, etc..... I will not use any other phone as my primary phone ever. The figures says it all!!!!

I don't even talk about the iPhone. Had one. Apple should really bring out something new now.

I don't really understand why people look at America/Europe when they want to see the trends.

Look at India and China and you will know what half the world is doing.

Yes Series 40 phones. Just because they sell 2 billion feature phone does not mean they can sell smartphones. From the looks of it Nokia already cancelled 1 of the 3 new symbian belle phones. WP7 is still to show that it is a competitive mainstream operating system. And the gem in the making that Nokia had with the N9 is also cancelled.

Totally agree with you... The lack of a decent internet option for Android and iPhone is what allows Blackberry to do so well. If we weren't so hard done by with internet costs in SA, making use of a real smart phone, such as Android or iPhone(potentially Windows phone 7 now as well) would be so worthwhile ... That said, I still love my Android and currently I dont think any other platform can compete.

Buying a data bundle for around R60 is more than sufficient for whatsapp, email, weather, google searches, etc. Especially as I am often near wifi any way.

Funny, did you just pull that one out of a bag? A quick google search will tell you that Nokia smartphone market share in india dropped from 82% in 2010 to 48% in 2011. Samsung is in fact leading the chase there now.

It doesn't matter how strong they are or how many balls they got, if they keep making crappy products nobody or their mother is going to buy it.
