'm looking for an easy to use app to setup and monitor my home wifi via the router - not per device. Telkom' s Zyxel router allows me to block webpages but individually, no category blocking.

Have Open DNS at home but it wasn't working yesterday and it is quite complicated trying to figure out why, I'm not technical.

Easiest and cheapest will be DNS service. Downside is it will allow it if the DNS is changed on the client device, bypassing the DNS set on the router. (You can block DNS traffic perhaps from internal devices, so if it's changed on the device your router will block the DNS request to any other server, depends on your router

Routers with those functions built in are not cheap at all.... but would look something like this...

And also apply Application filters so that they can't use a proxy or VPN service to bypass...

And deep SSL inspection seeing a lot of the Applications need that to actually work effectively....

i know it doesnt go to the op's preference of simple but if possible you can deploy a pi-hole vm https://pi-hole.net/

then block port 53 on the router so they cant change the dns server on the device.

Dear OP. I presume this is to do with your children?
If they're teenagers, you need to have already embarked on decent sex-ed with them and taken away some of the temptation. Blocking every site is futile, there's too many workarounds and too many new sites popping out faster than one can blink an eyelid

Just did a quick google maybe try this out it looks really really easy to setup https://www.qustodio.com/en/

Meanwhile using an online proxy will probably bypass filtering unless you install software on the device itself to monitor what text is displayed on the screen.

I am a parent myself... I guess I just started as soon as I possibly could.
A suggestion here, and I am dead serious:
Rather allow some kinds- maybe a mag or two (yes that scene from the movie Blended) than to outright deny it. Don't want to mess up their sexuality and cause issues down the line

Block porn at you house..... Kid no problem ill just go watch by my friends place
