Bloemfontein FTTH Thread

According to the Cell-C coverage map, quite a bit of Bloemfontein is covered for fibre. But I'm not sure they're correct? When I choose my address and continue with the order, it says the provider is Openserve, but Openserve's own website says this area isn't covered.

Yeah, that really is confusing :wtf:

I think they're just using the Openserve fibre / backhaul to provide access to their network. But like you stated, not even Openserve's own coverage reflect what's currently covered and not. Was hoping that some of LHP will be covered, but not the case. I see however that Dark Fibre Africa is busy expanding into LHP in the future (basically right in front of our complex).

They're currently the ones that are busy digging next to the N1 which I mentioned earlier (have a look at their coverage map for Bloem: http://www.dfafrica.co.za/coverage/)

Now I wonder if SA Digital Villages (the ones that are responsible for the fibre on the image that stormtactics posted) make use of DFA? If that's the case, then it's definitely DFA that will be responsible for providing the fibre then into one area of LHP at least.

The DFA map is kinda difficult to understand - there is a green precisely in from of my house and if I click on it, it says 'live', but how the hell do I get fiber here? It's a free standing house

Which suburb and street would that be?

Depending on the suburb and the number of houses, they might roll out. Best way I'd say is to email DFA directly and enquire.

PM sent.I'll drop DFA an email, but I don't think there's a massive demand in my area.

I thought it's only Openserve operating in Bloem, so at least this is good news

Please send me a PM should you want Fibre in your Estate in LHP, this is currently a very high priority area and I am doing everything possible to get Fibre to all Estates in LHP.

Good day Pakka,

DFA is busy together with SADV with a massive roll-out of FTTH in Bloemfontein, with Residential I'd suggest contacting [email protected] where I would then send your request on to SADV for the approval of roll-out. If your address is "live" they would be able to assist you.

Regards,

Thanks, but its a free standing house and doesn't have anything to do with NRE.

Please contact me on [email protected] to discuss your concerns.

5 Years owning and living in my townhouse having to deal with your people. No thank you. National Real Estate is the sole reason I decided to rather sell my townhouse than keep it as an investment. Would never in my life ever do business or have any voluntary contact with you people. And I advice anybody I deal with to do the same.

Ok, let's stay on topic, please. I am as cautious of NRE as the next guy, but other things are more important, like fibre. NRE is only connecting people to DFA.

If you would like to vent about your NRE problems- open a new thread.
NRE if you are marketing- open a new thread.

Agreed with stormtactics.

Let's not turn this thread into a flame war.

DFA's fibre expansion via SADV into Bloem (especially LHP) is huge and I'm also trying to do everything from my side to get the word out to neighboring complexes close to me to show their interest. The more people we can get on-board the better :)

According to info I got Openserv is not not doing fibre in Langehovenpark this financial year. Not sure when their financial year ends. I also don't know anything about their planning for the next year.
Here's hoping on DFA but according to their map my street is not part of their planned roll out :(

Interesting, thanks for the info.

Just hang in there, they (Openserve) will eventually get to LHP. It's a huge suburb with A LOT or residents, they'll be stupid not to start expanding there before DFA gets busy but DFA is expected to start at October (Nelson Mandela from Tempe's robot +-) and then continue over/under the N1 and eventually reach Jan Spies avenue where they'll then go into LHP (see their coverage map - planned red line).

I think only by next year January / February we'll see them (DFA) start digging in LHP at the earliest. Openserve will probably start expanding in LHP by end of March 2018 (if I had to guess). I have seen Openserve splicing fibre in town on the street corner of the old Dros next to the new FNB building), so they are definitely busy in other areas in town and not just in Dan Pienaar at the moment.

All I can say for LHP residents wanting fibre is to be patient. Yes, it will take some time but eventually things will get moving from 2018 onwards concerning fibre in the suburb. An Openserve fibre techie told me earlier this year that Telkom wants a minimum of 45 000 fibre installations in Bloem alone (don't quote me on that). They have a LONG way to go to reach that number and LHP will definitely help contribute to their number of installations required ;)

With the Telkom LitTV news catching my attention, I'm considering FTTH.
But if you go for uncapped fibre, does their "content partners" even matter, if it can't deplete your data anyway? So, you could go with a different ISP (mweb, afrihost, vox), and stream the same content, and possibly save a bit of money?

Which ISPs in Bloem have given you good service? We're in Universitas, so the infrastructure is Openserve, I believe

Well, when I lived in Universitas-Ridge and had Openserve fibre, my Vox Fatpipe account performed quite well. When I used the Telkom account I had, it also performed well. Any existing ADSL account that you have, will work with Openserve fibre.

The content partners with regards to Telkom LitTV, isn't restricted to Telkom's backbone, so any provider from the ones you mentioned will work without a hitch.

So, if I had to recommend an ISP, I'd say go with Vox :)

So we finally made up our minds, and went for a 10mbps line, 100gb cap for now, with Afrihost.
We'll see if that is enough - been managing fine on 30gb/30gb nighttime on Telkom LTE for the past two years.

Since Openserve beat Afrihost though, anyone have the manual (or default login details, at least) for the provided Nokia G-240G-C router?

Highly doubt anyone will be able to provide you with that. It is usually locked down so that you as the consumer cannot tinker with it, so you're out of luck I'm afraid.
